Glug, glug, glug–death by oceans of email

Dear friends and loyal readers, Alas, my unread emails are stacked across multiple screens, so I may not get to your emails for days. Anything you sent from Thursday, Oct. 25 on is backed up. You can either be patient, or you can give me a call if something is urgent.xolibby

What we want to see Friday…and Saturday, too!!!

We don’t mean to scare you with such a long list (Happy Halloween!). But art is our candy–we want to see everything. After a lot of whittling, this is what we came up with for some great stuff to see this weekend: Gallery Joe Rob Matthews, Knoxville Girl: The Deposition, graphite on paper, 2007, 8.25 x 9.875” Rob Matthews tells a sordid tale of murder in his series of drawings, Knoxville Girl, at Gallery Joe. We’re definitely not going to miss this one, in which Matthews’ signature noir lighting has given way to glowing white backdrops, lending a religious, archetypal ... More » »

Weekly Update – Nature at Fleisher Challenge 2

This week’s Weekly has my review of the Wind Fleisher Challenge 2 exhibit. Below is the copy with some pictures. Call of the Mild“Wind Fleisher Challenge 2” concentrates on Mother Nature’s sweeter side. Hurricanes, tidal waves, Santa Ana winds, droughts and melting polar ice caps. Ma Nature’s on the front page every day, and she’s pissed. But what of nice, cuddly, friendly nature? Where not everything is decided by tooth and claw? You’ll find that gentler take on the walls at the “Wind Fleisher Challenge 2” in paintings and drawings by local artists Gregory Brellochs, William Gannotta and Rebecca Saylor ... More » »

New Martin Ramirez collection uncovered

Great Randy Kennedy story in the NY Times about the discovery of a trove of 140 drawings by outsider artist Martin Ramirez. The drawings which had been in boxes in the garage of one of Ramirez’s doctors for many years, were discovered by the American Folk Art Museum when family members emailed the museum and told them of their cache. (The AFAM organized a Ramirez show–which is traveling and now at the Milwaukee Art Museum). The family will give three drawings to the museum, and will sell the rest, and some of the proceeds are intended to go to Ramirez’s ... More » »

The week that was

A lot of openings in the last two weekends. I didn’t make them all but I’m going to run some pictures here with some links and say get out there and look around. So much to see so little time. PAFA, Oct. 19, 2006 Libby and I made it to the opening of Steven Power‘s show in PAFA‘s Morris Gallery but didn’t make Space is the Place (Outgoing PAFA Contemporary Art Curator Alex Baker‘s co-curated show also at PAFA). It’s up for a while and sounds good so we’ll be back for sure. Steve Powers, right, and Brian Campbell, doing ... More » »

We’re showing our small collaborative paintings. This is a sample of what will be in New York, A group of 48 collaborative paintings from the Useful Art series, 2001-2007. ... More » »

Energy of the Fluid Field

Rosanna Bruno (left) talking with Dona Nelson, organizer of Fluid Field. Behind them is Deborah Grant’s 70/30 split, oil, paper and relief on birch. I was late to see Dona Nelson‘s curatorial outing, The Fluid Field, up at Tyler Gallery on the campus in Elkins Park. I caught the short-lived show (Oct 3-21) at the closing reception and boy was I glad I did. The show of Tyler grads — all women whose graduations from the art school ranged from 1963 (Louise Fishman) to 2007 (Tanaya Neal, Natasha Bowdoin) — was terrific! Nelson, respected painter and Tyler faculty, poured her ... More » »
