Wondering about Jayson Musson‘s column Black Like Me in the Weekly? Well, we were too. Yesterday we got this missive from Jayson explaining that the column’s on hiatus from the Weekly (newspaper woes, they’re all over the place–they cut the art page this week due to lack of space (ie lack of advertising revenue) and last week they cut the theatre page for the same reason. The Metro’s had some staff cutbacks and the Inquirer/Daily News owners are threatening new layoffs….sheesh, a dying industry. Never fear: Jayson’s gone blogging with his column! He’s on Max Lawrence‘s Free News Projects blog, ... More » »
Libby and I were in Projects Gallery the other day and saw some new work by Caleb Weintraub, a favorite artist of ours (who had a show at Projects in 2006). That reminded me I want to pass on a couple links to a great, hot-off-the-presses interview with Weintraub by Christopher Lowrance of mwcapacity blog. Part 1 and Part 2. I know that Weintraub lives in Bloomington, Indiana and I asked Lowrance whether he was in Bloomington as well (the interview is by email so he could be anywhere). And I also asked him to tell me a little about ... More » »

The credit ran photographer: Lee Miller, model: MISS LEE MILLER (COIFFURE BY DIMITRI) There’s a confluence of exhibitions in or coming to Philadelphia that raise overlapping questions about women’s agency, their representation and self-presentation. They’ve also got me thinking about the extent to which one should consider biography in assessing artwork, something I’m not inclined to do. The Art of Lee Miller opened ... More » »
Billy Blaise Dufala and Steven Dufala Brothers and collaborators Billy Blaise Dufala and Steven Dufala have to be the two most unlikely PAFA grads ever. Their surprising art about the world around us–the homeless, bad taste and inflated lawn ornaments, the beauty of tools, and the dehumanization of the medical system and the body–is in this year’s Fleisher Challenge 3, up until Feb. 9. In the past, the Dufalas brought us toilet tricycles, a giant grater that looks like clumsy armor from a Monty Python skit, and a rusty dumpster with mendhi-like decorations and an upholstered interior. Each of the ... More » »
