It is amazing how some artist's reputations do not really reveal the true lack of ability.

Baldessari indeed launched a hundred careers. I half-expected one of the hundred to defend him. But Baldessari himself is all concept, and interviewing him, I remember, not his art, but his narrative of How He Became a Conceptual Artist. As Nancy Ewart implies, who cares? He's a nice guy, but everybody's nice.

Saw a few Baldasari pieces at the FIAC here in Paris. In chatting with two Canadians in front of these works, the only thing I could think of was: He launched the careers of a 100 conceptual artists from his Cal State art department chair. I do like his Beethoven ear piece and yes, indeed, he did create a space for many artists to put big dots over people's faces.

Very astute comments on Baldessari! When I reviewed his current show at the De Young, I really couldn't find anything interesting to say about the work so I concentrated on his biography and his process. I saw the charm but wondered if there was something lacking in me that I couldn't find any content and, in fact, saw no point in most of the work at all. Of course, I'm not a big fan of conceptual art but usually I find SOMETHING intelligent in a piece but all I could of is that Baldessari is a trickster and Duchamp did that one better. Now I know that I'm not alone in my opinion.
