I was blown away by Rose Frantzen's portraits...by the vast array of ages, characters, and experiences of those painted, and how their life experiences shone through in their faces. This is such an accurate presentation of the cross-section of people with whom we live and associate during our lives. A very "democratic" presentation that reaches into the viewer's soul as it reached into the soul of each Maquoketan sitter. Rose's facility as a painter of direct portraits is masterly and exceptional...to me, she outshines even John Singer Sargent in painting her subjects!

I love Rebecca Westcott's work; what a great loss it was to Philly a few years ago...it's gratifying to see her work in such a prestigious context. N
