I told the gentleman I was a New York art critic and implied the Barnes in Merion was a waste of art. Because he failed to convert me he became more unhappy. For the sake of bonhomie I should have cursed Philly. Making friends and telling the truth are often incompatible.

I'm sorry for the gentleman's inconvenience but I'm thrilled that finally all the rest of the region won't have to be inconvenienced to see the Barnes. The weight of numbers is on the side of the move as is the weight of other arguments (making the Barnes truly public like this is in keeping with what the founder wanted, eg).

Admittedly I am a newcomer to Philadelphia, but I've only met one person vehemently opposed to the Barnes move. He was standing in front of the new site lamenting broadly to a friend. Somehow I became involved in the conversation. It eventually transpired that he lived in Merion, his daughter sometimes works at the Barnes, and they would be personally inconvenienced having to travel all the way to Philadelphia just to visit the Barnes.
