Anubhav,
The exhibition got some real attention. The catalog won the prize for museum catalogs given by the College Art Association last February.

Apart from these things, the girls can definitely benefit from better role models. Being a Bengali, when I bought the book from Women of the Tagore Household by Chitra Deb it was simply due to the huge discount they were offering. It later dawned on me that the book addressed larger issues facing the women. The fact that the women of Tagore household were powerful and influential in their own way did not go unnoticed among the women of Bengal.

Hi, Andrea, just saw this yesterday and enjoyed it thoroughly. I had fun trying to guess which ones were collected by the Bonovitzes, which by Kramrisch before I peeked at the answer on the labels. I had better success at this than I expected. Now I'm going to read my catalog.

Oh thanks for reviewing this! I saw this exhibit sunday- completely took my breath away how beautiful and rich the stories- and delicate textures- of some of these kanthas. I think the installation was fabulous. From the slide show, to the beautiful back lit textile(so you could see how many pieces of cotton scraps were pieces together to make one full kantha) every detail gave the objects the respect they deserved. One of my favorite non-contemporary shows I have seen in a long time. I'm so glad to see a review of the show here! It's worth getting on people's radars, and I agree- it definitely does not discourage anyone.

Also worth mentioning- I have been feeding a growing interest in Hindu imagery as of late- and there is a hidden little show that is easy to miss and worth noting for anyone who is interested up in room 227 of the museum. It is a collection of Indian Ragas (paintings that were meant to be experieced with poetry and music for the Rajas and royalty). Small opaque watercolor paintings with an equal amount of impressive small detail as these kanthas. Beautiful scenes of daily life, religious stories, and amazing flowers and landscapes. Coming down on the 28th of February.

Both shows left me surprisingly more smitten than the chaos that was Gorky, on pay-what-you-want Sunday.
