Still from “Me & Pug-a-Poo”

Unsettled and unsettling at the UDel Gallery at the Crane

According to the curators of The Unsettled, a 15-person theme show at University of Delaware’s Crane Arts’ gallery, the exhibit explores “notions of duality, hybridism, and transformation.” Patrick Koziol and Michael Merry, two second-year MFA students at the University of Delaware, admit this premise is broad, but their show introduces you to a lot of interesting works.

The adventure of landscape – Becky Suss at Vox Populi

By Hayley Tomlinson Imagine waking up from a vivid black-and-white dream, in which you explored a recognizable yet distant city dense with foliage and structure, where the most intricate details were highlighted despite a sunless, cloudy sky, and you weren’t quite sure whether you were looking at a mural or real life. This is exactly how I felt when first viewing Becky Suss’ drawings, on display at Vox Populi. Her landscape drawings, void of any human activity, made me reminisce about being a child and exploring the depths of my grandma’s backyard, or weaving in and out of the strange ... More » »

The craft of art told by two exhibits at ICA – Bill Walton’s Studio and Charline von Heyl

Libby and I met recently with the new brain trust at the Philadelphia Art Alliance, Chief Curator Sarah Archer and Executive Director Molly Dougherty. In a broad-ranging discussion about Philadelphia’s art scene and institutions and the PAA’s long history as an on-again-off-again player in the city, Archer mentioned they were very interested in exploring their mission — craft and design — in a way that breaks the mold of the traditional craft exhibit with objects on pedestals and in vitrines. They want to broaden their program to include a discussion of the making of objects and the thinking behind the ... More » »

Hannah Price on photographing strangers and living without Facebook – next podcast on artblog radio

Hannah Price is the youngest artist included in the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s exhibit exhibit of local artists, Here and Now. She graduated in 2009 with a BFA in photography from Rochester Institute of Technology.  Right out of college she won an award in the Philadelphia Photo Art Center’s first emerging artist exhibit. After that, she’s been in group shows at Gallery 339 — remarkable for someone so young.  Price’s color photos, shot in film and printed digitally, show people, usually alone, in somber moments of quietude, often outside on the streets of Philadelphia.  Many of the works showcase the ... Class Warfare at Moonstone Arts Center

by Julian Phillips You will find the staircase to Robin’s Bookstore and Moonstone Arts Center between two bustling restaurants on an equally busy street. Once upstairs, you still might be able to hear the rabble and cries from those encamped at City Hall. Their chants and shouts are not intelligible, and many wonder what the protestors are trying to say. However confusing their message, we know why they have chosen to occupy the city center. We all feel it, hear and talk about why rabble-rousers and Americans hang their heads together.  And the Class Warfare exhibit at Robin’s/Moonstone will show ... More » »
