Three Philadelphia organizations engaged in creative placemaking projects have received ArtPlace Grants: The Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy has won $200,000 for a project on the Delaware Waterfront; the University City District has won $375,000 for design upgrades and art installations at the Porch; and the Asian Arts Initiative has been awarded $450,000 to commission work in the Chinatown area. The new executive director of the Main Line Art Center is photographer Amie Potsic, long time Director of Career Development Program at the Center for Emerging Visual Artists. She joins the staff on July 30. Congratulations Amie!

The largest fantasy art show ever mounted in a museum setting, At the Edge: Art of the Fantastic, is up at the Allentown Museum through September 9, 2012. Featuring more than 160 paintings, illustrations, and sculptures, you can get a glimpse of the show’s offerings at the Allentown Museum site.

ArtJaz Gallery, formerly a stalwart of Old City, has moved to Glenside, upstairs from African indigenous art gallery Galerie Hamid. It’s grand opening is on Saturday, June 23 at 115 New Street in Glenside from 12 to 6 PM. A welcome and Collector’s Dialogue is scheduled, along with guided tours!  Find more info in their press release.

Tyler professor Leeza Meksin, with support from an NEA grant, is preparing “Flossing the Lot,” an exhibition in which she dresses buildings in spandex at Artspace in New Haven. The opening is today from 5 to 8:30 PM. This work is a spirited commentary on role reversal and exploration of urban spaces, with a performance by Mira Stroika. Visit Artspace for more details!

Matt Suib and Nadia Hironaka are participants in “Attitude Cinema” at the Festival of the Cinema of Pesaro in Italy, curated by Camilla Boemio. The show runs from June 18 to July 2, with an opening on June 19th and the duo’s work from “1967” on display. More information on the artists at their site.

It’s usually not considered run-of-the-mill behavior to walk up to a person on the street and ask to see some art, but that’s what Joe’s Wallet is there for. Dedicated to pocket-size, moveable art carried on someone’s person, Joe’s Wallet is displaying Dustin Metz‘ short film “Philip’s Hands” on an iTouch this month. Find whoever’s carrying Joe’s Wallet by clicking the on view @ button on joeswallet.org (location only visible during gallery hours) to find the “gallery.” Two times on the books: Thursday 6/21  at Frankford Hall in the beer graden.  From about 7pm to 8:30pm, and on Saturday 6/23/  @ 2463 Martha Street  from 12:00pm to 5pm.

Isaac Lin’s Last Words, a solo show, is at Park Life Gallery, San Francisco from July 20 to August 17. He also has Portrait of a Generation at The Hole in NYC through August 10. Visit those sites for more info.

Opportunities

Highwire Gallery in Fishtown has put out an open call for submissions of art about public issues and politics for its First Amendment Show. They’re looking for meaningful work accompanied by a brief written statement, where applicable. Guidelines are $20 for one submission, $30 for 2, $40 for 3, and the size maximum is 6′ linear feet per artist. The drop-off period is noon to 4:00 PM, Saturday and Sunday June 30th and July 1st. The 2012 Fall/Winter Residency at the Eyebeam Art + Technology Center in New York is calling for submissions. The deadline is Friday, June 22 at noon, and more details can be found here.

The International Grant Programme of the Lepsien Art Foundation in Düsseldorf, Germany is open for submissions. The deadline is Wednesday, July 1. Visit their site for guidelines and info.

The Florence Artist in Residence  (F_AIR) at FUA School of Fine Arts, Florence, Italy is open as well. Sunday, July 15 is their deadline; visit their site for guidelines.

Closer to home, the In Practice Project Series at the Sculpture Center in Long Island City, NY has put out a request for proposals, with Sunday, June 24 as the deadline. Go to the Sculpture Center for more details.
