"Great Skin," Bodega's swan song.
“Great Skin,” Bodega’s swan song.

This weekend, we’re sorry to say, it’s curtains for Bodega: after three years with us, the gallerists are closing shop. Join them on Saturday, July 20 from 7-9pm to celebrate the closing of Great Skin, the last exhibition at 253 N. 3rd St. We’ve been very lucky to have had such wonderful support from the city and its art community. Bodega will continue to publish artist books and editions in addition to other curatorial projects. It’s far from the end, though – keep an eye out for future projects on Bodega’s new website at bodega-us.com.

Blake Bradford is curating an enticing free event at the Barnes Foundation this weekend, the second of three artist-led discussions of the exhibition Sculpture on the Wall by Ellsworth Kelly. On July 21, come join a discussion helmed by Alex Baker, Director of Fleisher Ollman Gallery and local artists Joe Boruchow and Shira Walinsky.  The discussion begins at 2 and wraps up at 3:30 PM. Be warned! Although it’s free, advanced reservations are required. Reserve your tickets online or by calling 215.278.7200.

Opportunities

We’ve gotten a tip from Nathalie Angles, a friend of Matthew Rose from Brown University, that Residency Unlimited is holding a benefit on Sunday July 21 2013. To support them (and support yourself!), you can purchase a $10 raffle ticket and win the chance of a month long artist residency in Southern China, all expenses covered. The residency takes place in November 2013 at the Da Wang Culture Highland in Shenzhen. Join RU at the benefit on Sunday July 21 from 5-8 PM to mingle and cast your ticket, and find out about their variety of other raffle prizes.

If you get a thrill from eleventh-hour races to deadline, get yourself over to DesignPhiladelphia: the registration deadline for this year’s DesignPhiladelphia Festival is tonight at midnight. This year’s theme, Experience Design, is one that’s been influencing our lives increasingly for the last few years. Similar to Fringe, it’s an open proposition; anyone can curate an event and join the celebration.

The Banff Centre’s Artist in Residency program in Visual Arts is seeking applications, and if you find mountainous splendor conducive to your practice, this has your name on it. Participants of BAIR are provided with an individual studio accessible 24 hours a day, as well as use of Visual Arts facilities including printmaking, papermaking, ceramics, sculpture, and photography. Access to these facilities is subject to additional fees. Residency length varies within the prescribed program dates (March 3-28, 2014); all residencies must begin on a Monday and last for a minimum of 12 days, with applications for residencies outside of the program dates accepted at the discretion of the director of Visual Arts. On-campus accommodations and requests for specific room types are subject to availability. Please apply by October 25, 2013.

Artist News

Amber Dorko Stopper, with whom we did a podcast on Nam June Paik’s 1990 public art piece Video Arbor in 2011, found her subject matter this month when Philly.com published a feature on neglected public art. Definitely worth a read, for those of us who walk by aging artworks every day without a second thought – probably all of us?

Richard Metz’ new work gets to the wild heart of the forest of Carkeek Park in Seattle. He’s created a wonderful menagerie, populated with hybrid human-animal totems as part of the Acclimatized: Heaven and Earth Exhibition, a collaboration of temporary eco-artwork with Seattle Parks and Recreation, the Carkeek Park Advisory Council, and the Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA). This is Acclimatized: Heaven and Earth’s fifth consecutive year; it opened July 13, and ends October 20, 2013.
