A friend of the Artblog, artist Elisabeth Nickles is recovering from a disastrous studio fire, and we are doing our best to spread the word to help her out.  There’s a link on her blog for donations, and you can also help her clean up the remains. It’ll be grueling work, but it’s far more than one (or even two) people can handle. Those with heavy-duty extension cords, demo-saw, sledgehammers, etc and strong arms are especially welcome. In the spirit of supporting Elisabeth during this horrible time, we’d like to remind everyone that she has a show opening tonight, the Winterthur Residency Exhibit. It begins at 6 and continues until 9pm at the Chris White Gallery.

Opportunities

Creative Capital has changed their Film/Video award category a bit, and they’re now accepting letters of inquiry for awards in Moving Image (formerly Film/Video) and Visual Arts. You can apply online at creative-capital.org/apply before February 28. Awardees receive up to 50,000 USD in direct support for their project and advisory services valued at more that 40,000 USD. Moving Image may include animation, experimental film or video, installation, interdisciplinary projects, non-traditional documentary or narrative. Projects can be intended for projection, hand-held devices, the web, television, galleries, etc. Visual Arts may include architecture/design, contemporary crafts, installation, interdisciplinary projects, moving image, painting, photo-based work, public art, sculpture, or works on paper. Projects may be site-specific or intended for display in galleries, on the web, etc.  The organization announces the 46 selected projects in January 2015. In order to be eligible for awards, you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident at least 25 years old, working as artists with at least five years of professional experience, and not a full-time student.

For German-speaking artists, the ecm may pique your interest. This is a postgraduate, extra occupational degree course on exhibition theory and practice that is being offered at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. As part of the Institute for Art and Cultural Sciences and Art Pedagogics of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, there’s access to teachers from both national and international institutions in this all-German course. The next ecm course begins in October 2014, and applications are now being accepted. Please submit your application form with C.V. and a cover letter. The deadline is March 2014. Before then, you can find more information and the application at ecm’s website. For any questions, contact the University of Applied Arts Vienna’s point person,  Beatrice Jaschke, at beatrice.jaschke@uni-ak.ac.at.

Some of Diedra Krieger’s many talents are heading to Alaska this summer, underrated as both a vacation spot and an artistic refuge. Plastic Fantastic, featuring Diedra’s works, opens at the Anchorage Museum as part of “Gyre,” a stunning exhibition on the dangers caused by debris in the ocean. That’s a long wait, though: for some light afternoon winter fun, Diedra sent us a video of what she calls “Hoopy Hour.”

Matthew Sepielli has reached his funding goal and is preparing to attend a residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in Ireland this coming March!
