What Really Defines a Space? “Surface Deposit” at Temple Gallery

What started as a New York survey project of building surfaces, conducted by the Seattle duo Lead Pencil Studio, has led to an exploration of space which dances between architecture and art. Tyler School of Art’s Temple Gallery is currently hosting Lead Pencil’s show Surface Deposit (2010), which examines the build up of materials like pipes, conduits and lamps that encrust urban structures.

Blacklight Dinner at Smile Gallery

After savoring some of the best Thai food I have had in a long time in Smile’s downstairs café, I headed upstairs to their gallery.  The small but well utilized space is currently hosting Bangkok and Blacklight.  The show combines urban, graffiti style artists from the Trenton area with a well renowned contemporary artist from Bangkok, Vichoke Mukdamanee.  The gallery has been divided into two rooms, one with bright white walls and full lighting for Mukdamanee’s glistening works, while the back room has been drenched in blacklighting, showing off some color popping works.  Together, they flood the space with differing ... The Many Guises of Darth Vader

100 artists, 100 Vader helmets.  What began as a simple business strategy has now become an impressive art collection. The harmony networks – It’s Who You Know at Projects Gallery

Projects Gallery did something unique for their current exhibition. Instead of choosing 25 artists for a summer group show, they chose five and asked them to each pick five more. The show’s fate rested on networking.

Trash Worth Recognition at Bambi

Bambi Gallery, in Northern Liberties’ bustling Piazza, is currently focusing on a rather curious theme: the artistic and symbolic capabilities of everyday trash. Both Kim Alsbrooks and Andrés Alvarez have chosen to use discarded items as the canvas for their works. While these artists have different points to make, each gives the trash an active voice in their works’ statement.

“O Zhang: The World is Yours/Ours” at the Leonard Pearlstein Gallery

Photographs of confident Chinese youth, subtly evoking powerful political and cultural statements, line the walls of Drexel’s Leonard Pearlstein Gallery this month. O Zhang: The World is Yours/Ours showcases two impressive photography series by the New York based artist, O Zhang.

The Absurd at the ICA

The voice of a woman in a plastic Viking helmet and green polka-dot sundress with brown corset, holding a giant foam cheese wedge, while donning an unexplained nosebleed, drifts throughout the ICA‘s second floor Project Space during the opening week of Video Art: Replay, Part 3. Ludicrous!. Video Art: Replay is a year-long, three-part exhibition showcasing recent video art in three different genres: documentary, animation and the absurd.
