Joshua Mosley in his studio

Josh Mosley, the thinking-man’s animation artist–on artblog radio

Joshua Mosley’s animations are often of anti-heroes puzzling out the challenges of what it means to be human and to think. Charming and challenging all at once, his videos were shown at the 2007 Venice Biennale and in museums around the world. Here in Philadelphia he has shown at the ICA and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The work begins with a real world presence–sculptures and drawings. But then the animations go into the computer. As in his videos, in conversation he rarely grabs for easy answers. Below is a short clip from the interview. Click “read more” for the ... More » »

Paying it Forward, $50 at a time

Back in December, before the holidays, we participated in a workshop with a number of other Creative Connectors. Much to our surprise, we were asked to play Santa. The leaders of the Connectors effort, Liz Dow and the Leadership Philadelphia crew, came to the meeting loaded with cash — envelopes with $50 in each — that was given to us so that we could “pay it forward.” What a lovely, crazy idea, we thought. People donated to churches or to needy folks or organizations helping the needy.  We gave our money to folks in the arts sector, something in keeping with our ... More » »

New podcast – Matt Kalasky on science fiction movies, absurdity and starting an online arts magazine

Matt Kalasky spoke with us Oct 17 about his role as one of the founding editors of the new online arts journal, the The Nicola Midnight St. Claire (now temporarily called “The New, New Masses” – you can hear about that on their website). We also wanted to hear about his art, which takes the form of performance and video, often involving a large dose of science fiction or fantasy.  Matt graduated from Tyler with an MFA in sculpture in 2011 and even while a student he was in group exhibits in many venues in Philadelphia including Vox VI, the ... Happy New Year Everybody!

2011 Liberta Awards!

Looking over our shoulders, this was a year with some good shows in spite of the tough economy.  Also in spite of the economy, West Collects adds an infusion of dough into its collecting pouch — and earmarks $100,000 a year for Phily artists! Meanwhile artblog had some excitement – we won the Knight Arts Challenge for our art safaris and fundraised successfully to match that grant; we lost the maps&listings (boo hoo–we miss them!) and took on some new writers and helpers. We’re sorry to see three artists we admired pass on:  Warren Angle; Twins Seven Seven; Walter Edmonds. ... More » »

U.S. debut–Bill Viola comes to Pafa and leaves behind a gem

Bill Viola came to Pennsylvania Academy last month for the opening of “Ocean without a Shore,” his three-channel video installation in its American debut! The installation –a new purchase by the museum to be permanently on display in the Morris Gallery — is installed as a triptych in what’s now a dark, chapel-like space, where the piece casts a moody, elegiac spell. The work seems to conjure up the spirits of the dead with cinematic special effects and sound right out of the Matrix.

Kickstarter premiums still available

You guys rock! We’ve hit our Kickstarter goal and then some. How can we thank you? Let us count the ways with premiums.   The Kickstarter premiums are still on the table. And we’re collecting donations there until Dec. 21. (The safaris costs exceed the basic fundraising goals, so all help is greatly appreciated). Love, Libby and Roberta
