Art, With A Chance of Attitude

Little Berlin’s group show, Forecast, places work by newly admitted members of the collective alongside pieces by founding members. As the press release notes, with a moderating dash of sarcasm: “Get a glimpse into the future through the artwork we make. Hence the clever title, FORECAST.” Indeed, the show gives a sense of what’s happening—some good, some still coming along—here in Philly. New collective member Leslie Rogers’ video account of a mugging, “The Meeting,” is undoubtedly the highlight of the show.

Extra Extra performances and critical mass on Frankford Ave.

While New York is watching Marina Abramovic performance retreads at MoMA, exciting new performances stole the First Friday shows along Frankford Ave. and environs. Suddenly I felt that I was not only on the hippest street in town, but on the hippest street anywhere! And if you want to know where art is going at this moment in time, this is the answer.

Alex Gartelmann’s words on the street

But don’t miss it if you can possibly get there. (Roberta did this as an editor’s pick for the Weekly). The sculpture in this show rocks; and the people organizing it come out of UArts’ sculpture department. There’s also some terrific 2-D stuff. And I loved the mix of DIY and not-so-DIY. Anyway, if you can rearrange your schedule and get down there today, that would be a good thing to do. Megan ... More » »

Weekly Update 2 – Art Glut! this weekend

This week’s Weekly has my editor’s pick for Art Glut, an apartment show opening Friday and running only through Sunday. Below’s the copy. Photos at flickr. Alex Gartelmann opens My House Gallery this weekend in his South Philly row house. Every season brings another DIY gallery or alternative space with youthful energy and optimism to burn. This month the sweetly named My House Gallery opens with a show of more than 49 artists in the first floor of Alex Gartelmann’s South Philadelphia house. Gartelmann—23, and a 2007 UArts graduate—is as ambitious as he is idealistic. “The reason I started it ... More » »
