South Philly Biennial sunshine

On this gloomy day in Philadelphia I want to post some pictures of the sunshine and brilliant colors of the South Philly Biennial, a 21st Century Woodstock in a parking lot that pulled a couple hundred people together to celebrate the thriving art community that’s sprung up in South Philly and loves it there. Libby and I spoke briefly and received an award for helping art grow. Our gold statuettes (they remind me of the Oscars!) were utterly sweet just like the whole event organized by the energetic and community-spirited artist, Athena Barat. Weekly Update – Am the Rhythm rocks

This week’s Weekly has my review of Am the Rhythm at Painted Bride. Below is the copy with some pictures. More pictures at flickr and see Libby’s review here. Jeanne Jaffe, Polygenesis-Progeny installation at Painted Bride. Undulating stripes and bursts of color, pulsing psychedelic patterns, delicious pink sculptural bubbles—all this and more make “Am the Rhythm” at the Painted Bride a jolly good show. The five-person exhibit of painting, sculpture and installation curated by Shelley Spector possesses a youthful ebullience. While the artists range from young to established, the high energy, sense of play and focus on beauty is uniform. ... More » »

Am the Rhythm– zingy psychedelic Pop

Jeanne Jaffe, Polygenesis-Progeny, detail, Resin and acrylic paint Am the Rhythm at the Painted Bride riffs in unexpected directions by grouping a somewhat unlikely quintet of artists–Jeanne Jaffe, Isaac Tin Wei Lin, Jackie Tileston, Laura Watt and Andrew Jeffrey Wright. Curator Shelley Spector asked the artists to respond to the space and to one another’s work, improvising, sort of the way a jazz combo improvises and riffs. The end result goes beyond the metaphor of music, turning the combo into something bigger and better. First of all, the artists in the show transcend the generational divide and the genre divide– ... Art in the Age TV–Andrew Jeffrey Wright

Our friends at Art in the Age blog (Copy Gallery) have a great new video interview with one of artblog‘s favorite artists, Andrew Jeffrey Wright of Space 1026. The piece starts and ends with psychedelic animation sequences based on AJW’s psychedelic X-Wave paintings (see the paintings at his webpage at Space 1026). And the interview is in the artist’s studio at Space 1026 and shows him working on a screen print for a t-shirt, and talking about why he does t-shirts as well as buttons, stickers, drawings and paintings — it’s all art to him, none of this high art, ... X marks Andrew Jeffrey’s Wright’s spot in Juxtapoz

I was browsing in my son’s favorite comic shop, Rocketship, in Brooklyn on Smith Street. Every time I go in there I end up dropping a little dough–really my son drops it, showing a tender and generous streak that always surprises me just a little. This time I picked up the August issue of Juxtapoz, and thumbing through, I found Space 1026er Andrew Jeffrey Wright featured in a two-page Showstopper spread. The reviewer admired a wall-sized “rainbow/psychedelic/zig-zag “X” canvas, which sounds sort of like this small work on paper also by Wright. The Juxtapoz item was really more a story ... More » »

People Post!! from Art for the Cash Poor

It was great to see everybody — and we even sold a piece or two!! Here’s our pictures from the event. More on Roberta’s flickr and on Libby’s flickr. Monday This and That

A little gossip for your morning joe Skullphone wall installation at Art Syndicate/Maze. detail Libby, Andrea and I went to Friday’s opening at Maze Gallery/Art Syndicate. Skullphone, whose wheatpaste images of a skull talking on the phone are all over New York and elsewhere (he’s a Los Angeles artist) had his imagery in the front. And Andrew Jeffrey Wright had his drawings, t-shirts and paintings in the downstairs back space. Good show and although I’ve seen some of the AJW pieces before I’m always happy to encounter them because they make me smile. Winged Pegasus skeleton video by Skullphone The ... More » »
