Weekly Update – Frank love at the Elkins Estate

Thanks.Frank, an outpouring of love for retired Tyler School of Art painting prof Frank Bramblett, honors a beloved educator and raconteur known for his wit, compassion and deep thinking about art, culture and society. (Full disclosure: In 2006, I co-taught one semester of senior painting studio with Bramblett and Libby Rosof.) Tyler alums put out the call, and works poured in from all over the country, from 35 artists in all, including paintings, sculpture and works on paper from local artists like Anthony Campuzano, Thomas Vance, Austin Lee and Rebecca Saylor Sack and out-of-towners Kelly McRaven (New York) and Trenton ... Every once in a while there’s a teacher who is more than a teacher, someone who influences students in unpredictable and fantastic ways.

Personal history–Frank Bramblett on Gee’s Bend

Post by Frank Bramblett [Every time we see Frank Bramblett, we feel like we have been handed a gift. This time, we bumped into him at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Tuesday. We've known Frank since he had something to say to us the first year of artblog, and then we taught a class with him at Tyler. Sure enough, seeing him Tuesday was also a gift. But here's something he mailed to us shortly afterward. It is an amazing prezzie from him to us. And we are regifting it to you. Roberta and Libby] Gearldine Westbrook (American, b. 1919), ... Energy of the Fluid Field

Rosanna Bruno (left) talking with Dona Nelson, organizer of Fluid Field. Behind them is Deborah Grant’s 70/30 split, oil, paper and relief on birch. I was late to see Dona Nelson‘s curatorial outing, The Fluid Field, up at Tyler Gallery on the campus in Elkins Park. I caught the short-lived show (Oct 3-21) at the closing reception and boy was I glad I did. The show of Tyler grads — all women whose graduations from the art school ranged from 1963 (Louise Fishman) to 2007 (Tanaya Neal, Natasha Bowdoin) — was terrific! Nelson, respected painter and Tyler faculty, poured her ... More » »

Briefly noted: Summer sizzle in and out of town

Cooking elsewhere: Houston Ripley has a hot show in NYC at Feature Gallery. Ripley’s obsessive inkblot drawingsmost remind me of Adolf Wolffli. It’s already up–May 26 to June 29. Is it a painting? Is it a sculpture? It is what it is–Frank Bramblett at his gnomic best. paint, wood. He makes the paint himself of mixing pigment, encaustic, sawdust, graphite, diatomaceous earth, cement or other materials into an acrylic base. No kidding. And for a double sizzle (arguably a triple), the amazing Frank Bramblett and the fabulous Zoe Strauss in one exhibit on Long Island???!!! The exhibit is named 3rd ... More » »

Tyler moves some dirt

The meta groundbreaking for Tyler School of Art’s new building on Temple Main Campus, 12th and Norris Streets. artblog pal and Tyler faculty Frank Bramblett wondered what body was buried beneath the perfect mound of dirt. The building will be 234,000 sq. ft. of space, some classrooms, some common areas for “dialog.” I know there are many folks with mixed feelings about Tyler’ School of Art’s big move from Elkins Park to Center City. I don’t want to say this move has enraged people the way the Barnes move from Merion to Center City has but it’s definitely set some ... More » »
