Ingrid Schaffner, ICA’s Senior Curator, has been with the Institute for ten years, and in that time she’s created many great exhibitions. Schaffner has a an easy smile, a ready laugh, and an interest in the absurd, from Dali and Dada to more contemporary artists like Richard Artschwager, for whom she worked as an archivist, pre-Philadelphia. The 84th Annual International Competition: Photography at The Print Center
The Print Center’s 84th Annual International Competition: Photography, one of the nation’s oldest juried exhibitions of its kind, has managed to stay relevant yet another year with the help of guest curator Ingrid Schaffner. Schaffner, the senior curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, has brought together a group of 40 artists out of a pool of 550 (not an easy task). The result: a pastiche of work investigating a myriad of themes such as dystopic landscapes, melancholia, communal living and the creative process. Queer Voices at the ICA
Queer Voice, at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA ), University of Pennsylvania through August 1, 2010 is an exhibition organized around an idea: that a number of artists since the 1960s have created narrative or performance-based work that emphasizes the voice, the voice distorted or manipulated such that gender is divorced from sex and/or gender is undistinguishable: a queer voice. Knight Foundation grant to artblog boosts Philadelphia art scene
We sent this press release out this morning. The grant involved was a small grant–$2,500–but it’s our grant and we love it to death. We hope it’s a precedent–for us and for Philadelphia!–l&r artblog, the Philadelphia region’s oldest and most complete source of online reviews, discussion and opinion on the visual arts, has been awarded a grant by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Cover of What Makes a Great Exhibition? In the course of reading the book, I didn’t find the answer, but I did find lots of food for thought.
