Cate and I went to the Vox building the Saturday after First Friday (which is usually a great day to go — mostly, the audio-video-robo works will be functioning; and often artists are lurking who will talk with you about what they’re up to). We found a bunch of good stuff at Tiger Strikes Asteroid, Napoleon and Vox Populi. TIGER STRIKES ASTEROID
We’ve been following Joe Boruchow‘s street art for years–from his shows at Bean Cafe to his wheat-pastings around town. We did a studio visit with the artist and you’ll find that on the blog–just search his name. Here’s today’s Inquirer’s story about Joe Here’s the nice 2-minute video accompanying the story.
News Lucien Freud dies at 88 Painter Lucian Freud – grandson of Sigmund Freud – died on July 20 in London at age 88. Copious commentary everywhere for this master portraitist and figure painter. The Washington Post obituary is is a good overview of the artist’s story.
By Dennis D’Alesandro Hive/Cave, a group show containing more than 35 artists at Pageant : Soloveev through July 17, sees Philadelphia as the breeding grounds for a disparate collection of insect-like hives where busy artists shack up and take shelter. Once settled in these spaces, they are able to simmer, grow, collect, and spit out their art like sugary vomit to nourish their neighbors and children.
The cigarette and soft drink ads strapped on utility poles and parking poles–those darned itty bitty ads are unregulated eyesores invading the streetscape of Philadelphia. Into the fray in uber-Catholic South Philadelphia, our hero cut paper artist Joe Boruchow has a solution–wheatpasting over the invasive ads a holy image the removal of which would seem sacrilegious. Here’s the image: To see this impertinent Baby Jesus installed, check out Joe’s blog.
Cut-paper meister Joe Boruchow is having a celebration for the publication of his new book Stuffed Animals, tomorrow at Johnny Brenda’s. The book is lovely to hold, with its embossed cover. Inside are images of the cut paper drawings, telling the story of a boy whose nocturnal adventure transforms him. The event will also include a slide show of the book accompanied by an original score (think movie score–move over John Williams). The score will be performed live by The Night Lights, for whom Joe sings, plays guitar and writes witty, often acerbic songs.
Joe Boruchow is channeling summer in the city, right now, and he shared his latest take on it with us. Hate those hot bricks. So I thought you too might enjoy seeing how you’re feeling in the heat expressed in cut paper. (The note on the door says, DO NOT SIT ON STEPS).
This just in from Joe Boruchow, cut paper posterizer and Nite Lights front man — a swine flu poster that remembers the Alamo. Remember to wash your hands, I say.
