News: Art and airplanes, Printeresting edits, opportunities, and more!

News The art and airplane trend We’ve told you  before about Jordan Griska’s “Grumman Greenhouse“, the repurposed submarine bomber turned sculpture/community greenhouse that was recently installed in Lenfest Plaza. Well artist Matthew Day Jackson also has part of a plane – the cockpit of a B-29 – on display in London as part of his exhibit at Hauser & Wirth. The piece is entitled “Axis Mundi”, and while it is cool, it isn’t a greenhouse, so we think Griska wins this round.

Wrestling Grumman Greenhouse into place – a photo post

We got some photos from Heike Rass of Jordan Griska’s airplane being installed in Lenfest Plaza.  We are herewith sharing them with you!  All the photos were taken yesterday by Sean Tucker.  Griska is the one wearing the bright green t-shirt.  The installation will continue Monday and should be finished that day, Rass said.  We interviewed Jordan about his plane for a podcast.  The interview is full of lots of information about the project.  Check it out.

Participate, activate, engage – programming is in the air!

Years after 1969′s Summer of Love, it’s the fall of power to the people. More than just looking, this season galleries, museums and alternative venues all over town want you to come in, hang out, eat, discuss, make, share, and generally become an active participant in what they’re doing. There’s no city-wide manifesto, and nobody organized this fall programming juggernaut.  Call it the influence of online social networking or the influence of foundations eager to fund socially-engaged programming. For whatever reason, the Philly art world wants You!

New podcast – Jordan Griska talks about sculpture, community and eBay

Jordan Griska grew up in Narberth in a household with a mom and dad who are physicians, and in fact Jordan was pre-med in college for a while until he changed his mind, switched to art, and transferred to Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Griska makes sculptures and installations from found parts and re-used materials. He has accordian-pleated a real gasoline pump (he bought it online) transforming it into a small, R2D2-like version of a functioning pump. Now, he is working on a big commission for a large temporary sculptural for Lenfest Plaza, the new public space at Broad ... More » »

Jordan Griska’s Grumman Greenhouse, next on artblog radio

Jordan Griska’s sculptural installation Grumman Greenhouse — which features a Cold War-era defense plane he bought on eBay (it’s being altered into a sculpture-cum-greenhouse) — will help inaugurate the new Lenfest Plaza outside Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, this fall.  The space, near the new Convention Center expansion on Broad St., will be christened Oct. 1 and Griska’s airplane sculpture is due to arrive before then. The artist and a team of helpers and engineers are working full speed ahead on the piece at the Philadelphia Traction Company, a huge studio space in West Philly that was a trolley ... More » »

Surprising new installations at Eastern State Penitentiary

If you’ve never been to Eastern State Penitentiary go this summer. Not only does the historic Dickens-era prison continue to look like the glorious decayed wreck it is, but the cellblocks are cool on a hot summer day. Long past is the time when hard hats were required, and this year’s four new art installations in the cells are terrific, and surprising.

Vox VI–objects of desire

Forget the summer doldrums of art. It was nowhere to be seen in the crush of people at Vox Populi Friday for its opening of Vox VI, the sixth of its annual emerging artist exhibitions held after the slew of MFA shows that mark the spring.

“Here Not There” in Rittenhouse Square

If you happen to be near Rittenhouse Square, you may notice a makeshift gallery in an unlikely home amid prime real estate on Locust Street. Inside the temporary space is an exhibition, Here Not There, curated by Philadelphia Salon creator and director Caryn Kunkle and featuring the work of three of its members: Caryn Kunkle, Pete Zebley, and Jordan Griska. The Philadelphia Salon is a collective of artists that meet weekly in the former Baird mansion on Broad Street. The Salon’s goal is “not to be exclusive” and to “connect the artist with the audience”. In addition, part of the ... More » »

Science Times

Philadelphia artist Jordan Griska’s ambitious solo show, Nowhere Fast—his first since winning the 2008 International Sculpture Center Outstanding Student Award—showcases his ability to turn an understanding of industrial fabrication into seriously high-impact sculpture. Unfortunately, whether due to the particularities of the University Science Center’s Breadboard space—more of a corporate lobby than an art gallery—or attempting to combine older work into a new theme—Griska’s ISC Award-winning Ad Infinitum piece is back—Griska’s show does not live up to the potential the best work suggests he has. Griska’s title, Nowhere Fast, sets a tone just this side of mid-20th century existential angst. His choice ... More » »
