2013 Knight Arts Challenge winners announced – Citywide, David Guinn, PPAC, Breadboard and more!
Congratulations to all the new Knight Arts Challenge winners in this the third year of awards from the Miami-based Knight Foundation. The awards to 43 groups and individuals were announced tonight at a ceremony at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Winners are in all the arts categories — theater, music, dance and visual art. Knight Arts Challenge year 2 winners announced!
Two years ago, the Knight Foundation roared into town with news of their $9 Million Knight Arts Challenge for Philadelphia. This year, the second in the 3-year Challenge, sees 35 winners whose projects will be funded by the Knight awards, which are matching grants that require local funds equal to the Knight amounts. The winners were chosen from 1,260 applicants to the contest, with winners from visual, performing, music and theater arts as well as some in more unusual pursuits. News Knight Arts Challenge Philadelphia names 55 finalists The Knight Foundation released the names of 55 finalists for its Knight Arts Challenge Philadelphia 2012. Finalists include artists, musicians, collectives, and community groups in the region. Winners are to be announced in the Spring.

News Sande Webster Gallery closes We heard it through the grapevine, Philadelphia’s groundbreaking Sande Webster Gallery closed its doors after more than four decades. Confirmed by Robin Rice of CityPaper, Webster has apparently had trouble during the recession. The gallery was founded as and continued to be a racially-diverse establishment that gave many young and emerging black artists as well as other young artists a place to show and sell their works. News Philadelphia Knight Arts Challenge Year 2 The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is opening up their second year of applications for the Philadelphia Knight Arts Challenge. They are investing $9 million over three years in ideas that engage and enrich Philadelphia arts and culture. In the first year, 36 ideas were awarded a total of $2.7 million… including artblog’s own Art Safaris! Applications for the Knight Arts Challenge will be accepted from October 3 – 31, 2011. We’re gonna do something really great with our new Knight Arts Challenge grant of $7,000 (plus an equal amount in matching funds–still to be raised)! artblog will help culture lovers explore the far-flung galleries and experimental spaces with our First Friday Art Safaris, guided tours by van to where so much of Philadelphia’s most exciting art lives. The two of us will lead the tours into the galleries. The safaris will start in the spring of 2012 and span four consecutive First Fridays.
Knight Arts Challenge finalists include artblog!
We are very happy to be finalists for the Knight Arts Challenge for Philadelphia, sponsored by the Miami-based Knight Foundation. The list of the 63 finalists (out of 1.752 applicants) includes local big fish and small fry like us, with about a third of the finalists from the visual arts realm. Here’s the list below. Creative Vitality in Philadelphia – you bet there is!
The house was packed as Mayor Nutter kicked-off a press conference on Monday announcing the findings of a Three-Year index of Creative Vitality in Philadelphia. The results of the the report show that Philadelphia’s Creative Vitality Index (CVI) score is 70% stronger than the national benchmark, and our CVI growth from 2006 to 2008 ranks among the top 5 in the nation. Additionally, our Nonprofit Arts Organization revenue is 5 times the national benchmark.
Knight night kicks off $9M Challenge for great ideas in Philadelphia arts
A mix of suits and arty types gathered in Old City Tuesday for a kickoff party at Trust celebrating the Knight Foundation’s $9 million challenge for great ideas for Philadelphia arts. Representatives of the city’s art groups gathered, swallowed some sliders, and listened as Dennis Scholl, Vice President for Arts, Knight Foundation, spoke about “the contest.” That’s what he calls the $9M Knight Arts Challenge program for Philadelphia’s arts scene, and just talking about it made Scholl twinkle like Santa Claus.
