News: Sande Webster closes, Warren Angle memorial, play at APS garden and more

News Sande Webster Gallery closes We heard it through the grapevine, Philadelphia’s groundbreaking Sande Webster Gallery closed its doors after more than four decades. Confirmed by Robin Rice of CityPaper, Webster has apparently had trouble during the recession. The gallery was founded as and continued to be a racially-diverse establishment that gave many young and emerging black artists as well as other young artists a place to show and sell their works. Fare at the NY art fairs – Pulse and Volta

We ran into a lot of folks at the art fairs last week. Some we knew, others were artists and gallerists we were meeting for the first time. Either way, the art fairs are chat fests with conversations about art, sales and the exhilaration of being at the fair. Talk is the glue that holds the memory of the fair together this year.  Other years it was the art.  Here’s a brief report from Pulse, Volta and the Armory.

Some people we love got Pews!

Charles Burwell, Red Bio, 36×37 inches; We love the way the drips create a wavy edge at the bottom that then creates a ridged shadow. Last week, Pew announced its 2008 Fellows, recipients of the coveted $60,000 awards for artists in the 5-county Philadelphia area. These are the largest grants in the country that individual artists can apply for, according to Pew.
