Weekly Update – Word-o-rama at Fleisher-Ollman and PAFA’s Morris Gallery

This week’s Weekly has my review of Fleisher-Ollman’s group show “Rich Text” and PAFA’s Morris Gallery video “Roz” by Burt Barr. Below is my copy with some pictures. And see Libby’s post on Rich Text here. Roz, by Burt Barr at PAFA’s Morris Gallery. “Rich Text” at Fleisher-Ollman Gallery is a roundup of lusty contemporary word art that’s a smile from start to finish.  And across town, the video by New York artist Burt Barr at PAFA’s Morris Gallery is also a great word piece — serendipitously scheduled —  a rumination on what words mean when mouthed by a person ... Two ICA-related shows-Rich Text and Jane Irish

Anthony Campuzano, Bicycle Bomb, 2008, ink on board, 20 x 30 inches Two Philadelphia galleries are showing art with lots of words–both shows with tie-ins to current exhibitions at the ICA. The galleries are the blue-chip Locks and Fleisher/Ollman, and the shows they have mounted are tip-top. At Fleisher/Ollman, the group exhibit Rich Text is keying off Touch Sensitive: Anthony Campuzano, an ICA exhibit of the artist’s text-based art.

All three shows are worth the effort ... More » »

Weekly Update 1- Summer Roundup

This week’s Weekly has my summer art roundup. Below is the copy with some pictures. More photos at flickr. Philadelphia’s art scene doesn’t take summer vacation anymore. Miguel Luciano, interactive piece based on Puerto Rican saying that (loosely translated) means that children can be heard when hens pee (which they never do). Miguel Luciano’s identity-fueled works at Taller Puertorriqueño use exaggerated stereotypes to poke fun at bromides about Puerto Rican identity. Luciano, a New York-based artist, turns Taller’s galleries into an interactive playroom with sculptures (including a slot machine) that let people “play” with their own identities. Luciano’s work is ... More » »

Energy of the Fluid Field

Rosanna Bruno (left) talking with Dona Nelson, organizer of Fluid Field. Behind them is Deborah Grant’s 70/30 split, oil, paper and relief on birch. I was late to see Dona Nelson‘s curatorial outing, The Fluid Field, up at Tyler Gallery on the campus in Elkins Park. I caught the short-lived show (Oct 3-21) at the closing reception and boy was I glad I did. The show of Tyler grads — all women whose graduations from the art school ranged from 1963 (Louise Fishman) to 2007 (Tanaya Neal, Natasha Bowdoin) — was terrific! Nelson, respected painter and Tyler faculty, poured her ... More » »
