Hot stuff this month at Sweatshop, Templeton, Grizzly and elsewhere

It’s a blizzard out there — with shows dropping like snowflakes on the Philly art scene.  Here’s some pictures and a few comments from our travels around town this past month.  All these venues have serious monthly (or bi-monthly) programs and with First Friday around the corner it’s time to get out and see some more. Weekly Update — Smokey spirituality at Rebekah Templeton

This week’s Weekly has my review of Dechemia at Rebekah Templeton.  Below’s the copy with pictures. More photos at my flickr. You may not know Bardo Pond members John Gibbons and Isobel Sollenberger as visual artists, but the couple has been making and exhibiting their shamanistic and mandalalike poured plaster art for years.

Weekly Update – New galleries in town!

This week’s Weekly has my roundup of new galleries. Below is the copy with some pictures and additional words. For most galleries, it’s a stuggle to sell enough art to pay the rent.  In Philadelphia many galleries supplement by selling offsite at the art fairs (often more successful financially than shows in town).  And many of the newest venues for art have a different business model altogether, selling coffee, tea, picture frames, etc in the front or back office – and running a gallery to boot. He showed two pieces in which I detected a debt to Eva Hesse: The Golden Moment of Realization and A Million Little Pieces. Both were made of the most modest materials (yarn and paper straws) yet occupied significant visual and psychic space. I decided to follow up with a studio visit and found the artist in a large loft near ... More » »

Andria Bibiloni’s Blaster Bike at FLUX Of the 10 Philadelphia arts organizations receiving a total of $5.3 million from the Wallace Foundation to attract a bigger audience, visual arts, which is red hot in Philadelphia right now, got two of the grants (see article in Philadelphia Inquirer). To be specific, Fleisher Art Memorial will receive $320,000 over four years, and the Clay Studio will receive $375,000 over four years. Of the other organizations, only the Fringe Festival, at $365,000, received in this relatively low dollar range. Here’s the list of other awards: Philadelphia Teatre Company, $410,000Arden Theater Company $425,000Wilma Theater ... More » »

Another newbie gallery-Rebekah Templeton!

Screen shot of the new gallery’s webpage (mostly under construction at the moment). Like popcorn, the galleries keep exploding in the pan, coming to life as if the town is a giant stove that’s lit everybody’s fire simultaneously. Rebekah Templeton Contemporary Art, project of Sarah Eberle and Ben Will, opens in November at 173 W. Girard, in the new Girard Ave. arts corridor. The innaugural show has work by New York artist Sara Gates (seen last year at Falling Cow in the show Embelish–read post) and the opening reception is the Second Thursday in November, Nov. 8, 6-9 pm.
