This was the fifth time I’d gone to ABMB (Art Basel Miami Beach) and the multi-ring circus that includes the peripheral art fairs, local museums, collectors who run private museum spaces, temporary public projects and various lectures, performances, film showings and parties. Sunny and in the 70s, it felt like summer in Washington, D.C. when Steve and I were there Oct 10-12 strolling the Mall, checking out the museums, seeing a play, eating at the eateries and packing into the Metro to get around. Amze Emmons, in his show World Headquarters, at the Painted Bride The new camouflage tenting material is made of recycled fabric. Such is the new camping these days, and it’s showing up in art work all around town. Last night we spotted it in several pieces by Amze Emmons, at his World Headquarters exhibit curated by InLiquid in the Painted Bride‘s cafe. Tents and buildings with patchwork fabric walls appear here and there in his unsettled cityscapes. Katie Abercrombie’s landscape includes some ad hoc furnishings for the nomadic life. If the Armory was the Bloomingdales of the art fairs (see Roberta’s post) we went to in New York this year, SCOPE was the circus, forever threatening to veer into chaos, with its 80 participating galleries in 30,000 square feet of space. The first hint that the sideshow was in gear was on Thursday, when the press and patrons preview got canceled because of raised levels of carbon monoxide in the exhibition space (apparently caused by a forklift operating inside the building).
