New curator, new look, at Fleisher/Ollman

Weekly Update — Fleisher-Ollman’s Winter Invitational goodness

This week’s Weekly has my review of the winter invitational show at Fleisher-Ollman. Below is the copy with some pictures and a few changes. Shawn Thornton, one of five paintings in the show, oil on panel, 11×11″ Sly and serpentine works turn Fleisher-Ollman’s sixth annual emerging artist show into an Eden with bite. Check out the hysterical Steven Dufala and Billy Blaise Dufala’s interview by David Kessler, now up at studioscopic. The brothers are the Jay and Silent Bob of Philly’s art world. The interview was recorded right after the close of their show in ‘Challenge 3′ at Fleisher Art Memorial Also new on studioscopic, See Doug Herren talks about how he came to make his quirky, riveted ceramic sculptures, inspired by the industrial scale of Philadelphia’s infrastructure. The work opens tonight at Kelly & Weber Fine Art in Crane Arts.

Their surprising art about the world around us–the homeless, bad taste and inflated lawn ornaments, the beauty of tools, and the dehumanization of the medical system and the body–is in this year’s Fleisher Challenge 3, up until Feb. 9.
