Real life vs. intervention art–Manybody at Temple Gallery

Post by Emily Regier You are Beautiful project intervention along Second Street First, it was my roommate’s ironing board, which buckled under the strain of the vigorous pressing I exacted upon my first-day-of-work-suit. Next, one of my underwires mysteriously loosed itself in our washer, arresting the machine at mid-cycle for days. And then there was the curiously shaped behemoth of a sculpture I collided with in our living room, which, as it turns out, was welded by her mother… As I troll Craigslist for a new place to live, I’m thinking the sculpture was the breaking point, so to speak. ... The First Friday — we find some edges

Joy Feasley, Last Picnic, vinyl paint on board, 20 x 25.5″, the conceit of a boy and girl having picnic way up in a tree, looking out on all of nature hits a lot of emotional notes–humor, wonder, love. Roberta told you about the carousel-like spectacle that closed our First Friday (post here), an event that included the two of us plus Andrea, too, who is fast becoming our regular ff companion. The evening not only ended with a bang, it started out with a bang–Philadelphia artist Joy Feasley and former Philadelphia artist Clare Rojas in Locks Gallery!! Now that’s ... More » »

Weekly Update 2 – Empathetic

Also in the Weekly this week, my review of Empathetic at Temple Gallery. Since the Weekly had an empathy failure when they published my review and cut off almost half of what I wrote, I’m going to share with you the missing 200 words, cut off the top of the piece, here. Here’s Libby’s post on the show. Breaking news: the missing words were a slip of the cursor in the cut and paste…that’s all, says my editor, the gentleman Steven Wells, who has lots of empathy and just called me and said it was his mistake and apologized. Thanks ... More » »

Temple and Empathetic

from a video by Jesper Just Just when the Philadelphia art world feels like it might be contracting, a bunch of new galleries suddenly pop up all over the place, and Temple Gallery reopens in its new digs on 3rd Street, around the corner from the Painted Bride, with an ambitious show that pries open Philadelphia art-in-a-box by bringing us a whiff of the international and national art world. I especially loved the videos that alluded to popular cinema and television. from a video by Jesper Just Danish artist Jesper Just’s videos express operatic emotions via pop love songs. The ... Thief of Hearts

I went to hear artist Phil Collins give his slide lecture last Monday night at the Arden Theatre. (See other posts here and here for more on Collins.) When I arrived, who did I meet coming out the door but the artist, whose face brightened to a big grin when he saw me. He gave me the official Euro-style two-cheek kiss and said, looking stressed, “I’m so very nervous.” A little while later he got up on the stage to give his talk which was great and elucidated the politics and passion behind the art. I won’t dwell on the ... More » »

Looking for love with Phil Collins

How do you like, much less love, someone who hits you? That’s the question that’s been troubling me ever since I willingly went to the slapfest convened by Phil Collins at Temple Gallery and got the shock of my life, a real live slap that hurt like hell and that I didn’t see coming in spite of all the warnings. And yet the guy who hit me is likeable, yea, loveable. I like him. See Libby’s post for her report. For starters, let’s just say I had what amounted to a willing disbelief that there would actually be a physical ... More » »
