Anthony Campuzano, “The Fall Back and Forth,” 2004, Colored pencil and graphite on panel, 22″ x 28″ First I got an email from Anthony Campuzano saying he was going to be in an exhibit at Adam Baumgold Gallery in New York this summer, an exhibit called Text Messages. I checked it out and it’s a star-studded summer confection, including the likes of Ed Ruscha, Jennie Holzer and Aline Kominsky Crumb. That one opens June 14. And then he added that he and Isaac Resnikoff were among the local artists whose recently acquired work would be included in the Pennsylvania Academy ... More » »
detail of Directions, an installation by Virgil Marti and Pae White. This is one of Marti’s chandeliers, with a faux macrame window treatment by White in the background I stumbled into the Hirshhorn yesterday, just before they closed, and lo and behold, there was that installation by Virgil Marti and Pae White that Roberta had mentioned here. The lobby of the Hirshhorn is modern and unsparingly spare, so to see this pair, with their rec-room excesses was pretty funny. Marti contributed his glass chandeliers hung from fabulous crochet-covered wires, gold-coated chicken-bone curtains (4/10/07: got a note from Virgil and they’re ... More » »
The folks who brought you Black Floor Gallery (RIP) also do the wonderful Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction website with real commerce (buy some prints and t-shirts!) and real art commentary on their blog–and now artist interviews on their vlog. Among other things, AiA’s blog now has book/zine reviews courtesy of artist and long-time bibliophile (who knew?) Damian Weinkrantz. Virgil Marti, left, interviewed by Annette Monnier, on Art in the Age’s new vlog. As for the vlog, Art in the Age blogger and new Copy Gallery member Annette Monnier is hosting an interview video show. The first video ... More » »
Thanks to Kate Ware for the heads’ up on this great Washington DC project. Virgil Marti, one of artblog’s favorite and most stalked artists, collaborated with Pae White on a new Hirshhorn Museum installation that turns the museum’s lobby into a proto-domestic interior. Sounds like a kick. The installation is up to July 29. Hear a pocast of conversation between White, Marti and the Hirschhorn’s Ryan Hil. White, by the way, was in a show at the ICA in 2000. Against Design also featured Jorge Pardo, Andrea Zittel and others.
In the listings this week you’ll find my mini-review of Virgil Marti’s whole house installation at Paley Design Center. Here’s that link and below is the copy. I have more pictures at flickr. And see Andrea Kirsh’s post for more on Marti’s installation. “Crazy Quilt”Through Fri., Nov. 17. Design Center at Philadelphia University, Goldie Paley House, 4200 Henry Ave. 215.951.2860. Virgil Marti’s landscape wallpaper with shrooms and flames, first installed at Pennsylvania Academy and newly installed at Paley. Virgil Marti is in love with the ’70s—an era of shag carpets, macrame and DIY marijuana growing. The local master printer, teacher ... More » »
Post by Andrea Kirsh Andrea Kirsh discovers Hidden treasure, and the promise of a great party Candy Depew and Virgil Marti have done extraordinary installations in two Philadelphia sites, and if both include gilded skulls, it may be in anticipation of the Day of the Dead, or Halloween, or merely a sign of the times. But don’t miss them. To begin, I’d like to introduce Robert Wuilfe. He’s a lively and very imaginative young curator who figured out how to live in the best part of Center City by becoming site manager at the Powell House, e.g. he lives above ... More » »
