Creative Africa Through the Eyes of an 8 Year Old – 2016 New Art Writing Challenge

I give this exhibit 3 out of 3 wishes, which means it made me wish for three things. It is a nice view of designs. The designs with bright, bold colors are like dresses I have never seen before. They are a fierce combination of a lot of different colors and shapes like chicken heads on straight fabric with a stained glass design on the ruffled fabric all on one dress! I wish there were kids’ fashions in the exhibit, too. I also wish that I could see how they are sold in Africa. What do the shops look like? Who gets to wear these clothes? I wish I could! They are interesting fashions and would make the person wearing them look bold and fierce. Three wishes means it made me imagine 3 things and that is why I love to go to museums!

Artblog Presents Creative Africa – Akinbode Akinbiyi

Akinbode Akinbiyi was born in England of Nigerian parents. The Berlin-based artist is a self-taught street photographer who calls himself a “wanderer.” He loves mega-cities and in fact he told us he wandered around our own mega-city, Philadelphia, and took photos when he was here. Artblog spoke with Akinbiyi on May 13, 2016, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Perelman Building, home of five Creative Africa exhibitions. You can see Akinbiyi’s beautiful black and white photos at the PMA Perelman building now until Sept. 25, 2016.

At the Barnes Foundation, Nari Ward’s direct engagement with issues of race, culture, and class in contemporary America makes for an interesting counterpoint to the African art collected by Dr. Barnes (and by the Penn Museum) in the early 20th century. Bill Hutson Life and Art Memorial, Philly Celebrates Jazz, African American Museum in Philadelphia has new board members, Melissa Joseph at List Gallery, plus opportunities

Hi, this week we share sad news in the passing of architect Rafael Viñoly, designer of the Kimmel Center. Events happening soon can be found in the memorial to artist Bill Hutson. As well as in Philly Celebrates Jazz, an annual celebration featuring live jazz music, jazz-inspired block parties, jazz poetry events, jazz walking tours, and more. Philadelphia artist Odili Donald Odita opens a solo show, Windows, at Stevenson in Amsterdam. Some interesting gallery shows are soon to open in the form of the List Gallery hosting Conflicting Truths by Melissa Joseph and Automat exhibiting Centennial Rust by Christine McDonald. I hope you’ll find this week fruitful and possibly visit some exhibitions and events.
