Whitney a’coming this week.

Carol Vogel‘s description of the Whitney Biennial 2008 in this morning’s NY Times makes the show sound like a 3-ring circus. Fewer artists than before yet the show has two venues, the Whitney’s building and the 67th St. Armory. And the latter will have activities like a sleepover! dances! a regimentally-themed bathroom! and weird haunted house noises! Get your party hat and get up there…. The show opens to the public on Thursday. We’re going up Tuesday for the preview. Check the museum’s website for performance/event details since some may require prior registration.

All that performance and alternative space stuff in this year’s Whitney Biennial seems right on target for what’s happening in the art world, a reflection of what we saw in the Localized Gravity show that took over the ICA last year and the whole PopRally series going on at MoMA/PS1, which recently included a night with Space 1026 and Cannonball Press. It’s a little hard to wrap it all up nicely in a little precious object of art to take home, but what we are seeing and making is a reflection of what’s simmering under the surface of the country right now–outrage, frustration, rebellion and disgust with the status quo.
