Totemic Whammy whammy whammy at FLUXspace

Alan Prazniak (l) and curator Dustin Metz with Prazniak’s Bite, oil and charcoal on canvas at FLUXspace. Alan Prazniak‘s paintings and drawings erupt like volcanos and challenge you to a stare-down. There’s passion and thought behind the seductive works, which are now on view in Totemic Whammy at FLUXspace (he’s also got work in There will be Animals at Bambi — see Libby’s post) — and if you pick up a Willem DeKooning vibe, it’s there, although the artist told me it’s not a conscious quoting but more just what comes out when he paints and draws. There Will be Animals at Bambi–of course

Alan Prazniak, Protect the Moondog A gallery that calls itself Bambi is bound to have a soft spot in its heart for a show about animals. And here it is at last: There Will be Animals. Alan Prazniak, Women and Children First, Oil on Canvas Artists Tory Franklin, Alan Prazniak and K-Fai Steele were chosen by Gallerist Candace Karch from the 18 artists at the recent Bambi Biennial show (which Roberta and I juried). Bambi Gallery in Fishtown is showing it’s tongue-in-cheek titled Bambi Biennial through March 16. The 18 artists were selected by Roberta Fallon and Libby Rosof – yes – Artblog‘s Roberta and Libby. Lest this seem like an insider job, I’m planning to discuss the artists, not the selection, except to say that Fallon and Rosof favored artists whose work they didn’t know and had lots ... More » »

Tyler BFA redux

Following Libby’s great post on the BFA show up at Art Making Machine Studios I thought I’d run a word or two about the BFA show I saw at Tyler Hall a few weeks back. Our student, Alan Prazniak was in that show. Postcard for BFA show at Tyler. Alan’s work is on the right, and Kati’s is bottom left and Paul’s is top left. The show, with works by Kati Gegenheimer, Paul DeMuro and Alan Prazniak paired two makers of abstract art (Kati and Paul) with someone who’s working figuratively and mining literary sources. Apart from the show’s setting ... More » »
