Julie Green’s ‘Last Supper,’ Patricia Hills on Jacob Lawrence and Suzanne Hudson on Agnes Martin

I was in Miami last week for the rare trip not instigated by art, but it included a good bit of art nonetheless. I was visiting a sick friend, so had a chance to do a lot of reading. On the plane I looked at the current issue of Gastronomica, the sexiest, best-designed scholarly journal I’ve ever seen, with fascinating articles written for real people as well as food scholars; everyone’s interested in food, no? One article featured a sugar sculpture competition arranged by the Food Network. Food art has a respectable place in art history, since in the 16th ... More » »

Last chance–Fleisher Challenge

The best reason to see the first Wind Fleisher Challenge of this season (ends today) is Arden Bendler Brownings enormous abstract cityscapes.

Wind Challenge Exhibition talk with Sue Spaid at Fleisher Art Memorial

The weather on Thursday evening, November 4, could have set the stage for the opening segment of a mystery movie. Instead, the chilly air and endless stream of rain provided a conspiratorial accompaniment to the appropriately titled Wind Challenge Exhibitions at Fleisher Art Memorial, on view through November 20. Although the title was grounded in a far more practical origin than the elements – the surname of its principal funders, Dina and Jerry Wind – it added a touch of irony to the bedraggled guests that trickled in for the gallery talk at Fleisher that night.

What we want to see Friday and next Thursday

Work by Amy Stevens (top), Kim Alsbrook (left) and Miha at Bambi Gallery Say it isn’t so!!! Some galleries have moved their openings to Second Friday this month. Too much New Years’ partying, we guess. That would certainly be the case for those crazy Space 1026ers who are marching in the Mummer’s Parade with the Vaudevillains New Year’s Comic Brigade. They’ll be performing around 9 a.m. in front of City Hall. Sounds fun, if you can get up that early–better yet, just stay up from the night before. Then go back to sleep until Friday, the 9th, for theirs and ... More » »

Weekly Update 2 – Fall Guide

More at flickr And for pictures of the ICA show, here and for the Perelman building here. PAIRED DOWNExhibits on music, food and lace come in twos. Two is the operative number this fall, with several well-paired shows offering a double-dip of art. Two music-filled exhibits will be hot stuff for the ears; two photography shows on food (and eaters) contemplate hunger and excess; and two shows on lace raise thoughts about the fabric of life. Also gamely ... More » »

23 Degrees of Art at the Icebox

I saw five wonderful shows last week. I’ll tell you here about 23 Degrees at the Icebox Project Space a CFEVA show with 23 new associate artists making a debut. It’s a massive show, each artist represented by more than one work, but because it isn’t curated it’s a show of individuals whose works don’t speak so much with the neighbors. That said, it’s a strong show of strong works. Jarrett Min Davis’s futuro mystery painting in 23 Degrees at the Icebox Many but not all of the artists are new to me and what surprised me was to discover ... More » »
