The streets may have been deserted, But the few galleries that were opening for First Friday on the July 4th holiday weekend still had a surprising number of attendees, if not exactly major crowds. And since I began at Bambi at the Piazza, everything seemed quite celebratory.
Bill Lohre, detail, Life, Light, Air (inspired by Chutes and Ladders and Joust),mixed media Bill Lohre has more than one show up at a time, with work at Vox Solid Gold until the 27th (see Roberta’s post) and work at Bambi Gallery’s Welcome to my World, up until July 20. Alan Prazniak, Protect the Moondog A gallery that calls itself Bambi is bound to have a soft spot in its heart for a show about animals. And here it is at last: There Will be Animals. Alan Prazniak, Women and Children First, Oil on Canvas Artists Tory Franklin, Alan Prazniak and K-Fai Steele were chosen by Gallerist Candace Karch from the 18 artists at the recent Bambi Biennial show (which Roberta and I juried). Terrence LaRagione, Ruminations, oil on panel Some of the toys in Terrence LaRagione’s paintings in “Some Assembly Required” at Bambi have gone retroactive and nearly radioactive. This latest outing by LaRagione takes on the charm of old-fashioned comics, thereby transforming the hyperlit toys into something slightly sinister against dark, oily, old masters backdrops. Think early Disney meets Rembrandt here. Terrence LaRagione, Have No Fear, oil on panel Yet the work is not too scary to put in a kid’s room. It’s almost like LaRagione has captured the creepiness of the Teddy Bear’s Picnic, without losing the hug factor. Terrence LaRagione, ... More » »
A Ron Ribant gun. It never really looks real. Nor does it try to. I found a great route to Fishtown–north on 95 to Frankford Avenue and go right on past Johnny Brenda’s. I was on the way to Bambi for Rocks-n-Glocks. I sort of knew what the rocks were going to look like. They translate well in photographs. The big surprise for me were Ron Ribant’s “glocks”–especially the foam core-layered guns (maybe they were wood?)[added 2/18: oops, they are masonite]–not-quite replicas, not quite toys. There’s only a partial dimensionality, but it consists of layers of flat planes, painted to ... More » »
