First Friday at 319 N. 11th St.
The Collective Spaces at 319 N. 11 St. were teeming with activity last Friday night – openings at Vox, Copy Gallery, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, and a new space called ‘Progressive Sharing‘ that just opened on the 6th floor of the building. Secret Passage by Charles Hobbs, on display at Vox, is a somewhat awkwardly choreographed interactive piece. As one approaches the opening to the exhibit a large, almost surreal twisted gate structure is immediately viewable, inhabiting the center of the room. Upcoming Art and Art Films at International House A piece from 2005 by Margaret Kilgallen, one of the artists to be featured in a film at I-House.International House has always been one of Philadelphia’s best venues for film (a hidden one, to judge from the small regular attendance) and they’ve been adding art, courtesy of InLiquid.com which has been presenting video work in I-House’s lobby space. This week’s Weekly has my review of the winter invitational show at Fleisher-Ollman. Below is the copy with some pictures and a few changes. Shawn Thornton, one of five paintings in the show, oil on panel, 11×11″ Sly and serpentine works turn Fleisher-Ollman’s sixth annual emerging artist show into an Eden with bite. First Friday with limits
Adam Cooper on guitar in the one-night performance/installation Breakfast at Tiffany’s, at Copy Gallery Hey, First Friday was great–at least all that we saw of it, which wasn’t much given Roberta has the sniffles and I was plain old tired. Here’s what we saw:Copy Gallery had a pretty funny one-night performance. Adam Cooper, tented in a hilarious costume by Elsa Shadley, was on guitar; the gallery was decorated in piss-elegant splendor, a lit-up nightclub with reflective mylar and floral sconces, hanging stuffed plastic bags from the ceiling, blue draperies, and clothes strewn across the floor, implying either earlier debauchery or ... This week’s Weekly has my review of Pay to Play, the guest-curated show at Black Floor Gallery. Below is the copy and here’s the link to the art page. Here Comes the BribeBlack Floor’s “Pay to Play” show is topical but shallow. Albo Jeavons’ “corporate” takeover of the Black Floor website. Beware of going to the website because it may freeze your computer. I got in and out on my mac but others have had trouble.
