Scene downtown – Julie Mehretu’s mural and Skin Fruit at the NuMu

Kitty, my Milwaukee buddy, and I spent a misty afternoon with Cate two Sundays ago walking around lower Manhattan and going to the New Museum’s Skin Fruit show.  Part of our downtown walk was inspired by Calvin Thompkins’ New Yorker article about the $5 million mural by Julie Mehretu. $5 million? Kitty, who paints murals in Milwaukee, wanted to see this thing, and so did I.

Whitney Biennial – noisy, quiet, beautiful, ugly

Now in its 75th go-round, The Whitney Biennial is still the big kahuna, the show every American artist wants to be in and every art lover wants to see. This year the career-boosting show includes no Philadelphia artist.   We had representation in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008 — so much for that trend.  Instead, the curators went to Chicago, Oregon, Los Angeles and, of course, New York for the 55 artists, more than half of them women (a first) and many of them under the national radar.

We took the subway to Chambers St. and walked over to the Hudson and turned south. If you haven’t done it, it’s a ... More » »

Robert Colescott at Kravets-Wehby We loved Robert Colescott At Kravets-Wehby for his raunchy straight-ahead sex, lies and Minnie Mouse imagery. Great painter, great compositions. He takes Jim Crow and makes it his own. We are reminded of energy and transgressiveness of Jorg Immendorff and his Cafe Deutchland paintings. Nick Cave at Jack Shainman Nick Cave‘s fashion ...
