The essay accompanying Dematerialization, up now at Pterodactyl Gallery in Kensington, includes the observation that “many contemporary artists and art productions have aligned with minimalist Donald Judd’s 1965 declaration of ‘disinterest in doing [painting and sculpture] again.’” In the work on display in Dematerialization, curated by Jamie Png, this “disinterest” has extended to a negation of artistic intent, narrative, and in some cases even aesthetic appeal. Any way you look at it, Scripted at Gross McCleaf Gallery is a pretty open-ended script. While a significant portion of the show in McCleaf’s wonderful gallery space is devoted to painting, there are also strange objects, an installation, photos, and video art.
When Anne Schaefer creates art, she wants to immerse the viewer in a particular visual environment. Because of this, her work is usually large-scale. One challenge she encountered in planning her current show at the Tiger Strikes Asteroid Gallery was tailoring her vision to the gallery’s small dimensions.
