News post – Betty Leacraft’s South Africa voyage, urban braille at Slought, MoMA’s Rockaways tribute, opportunities and more!

News   This weekend brings a new Slought presentation on land vacancy, with “turf tagging” by David Stephens as one of its remedies. His creations, using urban braille gardens to call attention to land vacancy in Philadelphia, form a large floor mantra (“act knowledge”). The exhibition features prototypes, templates and a mold for forming outdoor braille gardens; each template is in the shape of braille bumps and approximately six feet in width. February – Cold outside but hot inside, a belated First Friday photo post

First Friday started early for Libby and me with a trip to the Perelman Building at the PMA with Collab board president Vesna Todorovicz Sacks, who showed us the Collab 2013 Design Excellence Award show of Australian designer Marc Newson.  Not only is the work a delight — playful, colorful, sleek and clean, the design of the show itself is very cool.  Like an exploded 3D version of a model home, the show features a garage with a Ford Concept Car, a kitchen, living room, two bedrooms and bath–a highly engaging little pad to dream yourself into. News This just in from Libby and Roberta — We learned today that Curator of Contemporary Art Julien Robson will no longer be at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts as of the end of the month. What’s next for the risk-taking curator who brought contemporary art from Philadelphia and the hinterlands into PAFA’s exhibition spaces? Other projects, he said, including bringing artist Mel Chin to “curated by-Vienna,” an international art exhibit in its fourth year.  Julien was one of 25 curators invited to participate in the 22-gallery art festival, which opens Sept. 20, 2012.
