Chelsea – We look high and low and run into friends

It was a day of big sculpture installations and unexpected encounters with friends. Cate ran around with us in Chelsea. We also had a gastro-incident and a gastro-delight: At our usual eatery, Pepe Giallo, the little Italian place at 253 10th Ave, we hadn’t even ordered when our wait person came to us and said they couldn’t take our order because the NY Dept of Health had just walked in to do a surprise kitchen check. Hits of the week in Miami-Post #1

As you know, the art fairs are overwhelming. We saw six fairs and two collections plus some stuff sprinkled around Miami. Here’s what wowed us. We’re starting with sculpture and 2D favorites. Next post we’ll do some videos. We went down to the fairs looking for trends but couldn’t find them since there are so many being worked on all at once–the economy, politics, love, death, hate, women, survival, ecology and just having fun. Through You: Contemporary photos at Penn

Thomas Ruff, Portrait (Thomas M. Schell), 1987, C-print, 210.8 x 160 cm “Hot” is what Gabe Martinez promised, trying to get Roberta and me to the photography exhibit Through You. And he’s right. It’s hot not just because it’s from steamy Miami. This the second big photography exhibit to come here from Miami to a college art gallery. Through You, at the University of Pennsylvania, is from the Martin Z. Margulies collection, widely acknowledged as one of the top collections in the country (I can’t find who ranked it, alas).
