Martha Wilson, Nick Cave and Pepon Osorio in New York City

Age was something that happened to Other People, so it was startling to walk into P.P.O.W. Gallery to see a huge, poster-sized photograph of Martha Wilson in her exhibition I have become my own worst fear (through Oct. 8, 2011).  I hadn’t seen Wilson in twenty-five years and, turning to her dealer, Penny Pilkington (whom I’ve seen intermittently during the more than twenty years we’ve been aquainted, so we’ve aged slowly for each other) I said, I guess we’ve all gotten older.

Chelsea – We look high and low and run into friends

It was a day of big sculpture installations and unexpected encounters with friends. Cate ran around with us in Chelsea. We also had a gastro-incident and a gastro-delight: At our usual eatery, Pepe Giallo, the little Italian place at 253 10th Ave, we hadn’t even ordered when our wait person came to us and said they couldn’t take our order because the NY Dept of Health had just walked in to do a surprise kitchen check. Things seemed to be selling well from what we could tell. People were happy but a little lost in all the aisles of art.  One trend ... More » »

Circus circus at SCOPE

If the Armory was the Bloomingdales of the art fairs (see Roberta’s post) we went to in New York this year, SCOPE was the circus, forever threatening to veer into chaos, with its 80 participating galleries in 30,000 square feet of space. The first hint that the sideshow was in gear was on Thursday, when the press and patrons preview got canceled because of raised levels of carbon monoxide in the exhibition space (apparently caused by a forklift operating inside the building). We got a nice closeup view of firemen and their gear. (In this year of cardboard models, however, ... More » »
