Black Like Me online at Free News Projects blog

Wondering about Jayson Musson‘s column Black Like Me in the Weekly? Well, we were too. Yesterday we got this missive from Jayson explaining that the column’s on hiatus from the Weekly (newspaper woes, they’re all over the place–they cut the art page this week due to lack of space (ie lack of advertising revenue) and last week they cut the theatre page for the same reason. The Metro’s had some staff cutbacks and the Inquirer/Daily News owners are threatening new layoffs….sheesh, a dying industry. Never fear: Jayson’s gone blogging with his column! He’s on Max Lawrence‘s Free News Projects blog, ... More » »

Weekly Update 2 – Cute is all around us

This week’s Weekly has my holiday roundup story on the cute in art. Below is the copy with some pictures. More photos at flickr.Aw-some ArtDevil monkeys, crocheted skulls and heartbreak made achingly sweet. Cute is the current art darling, pushed mostly by young artists but also some midcareer folks like Jeff Koons, who knew before the rest of us that irony would one day turn stale. Koons’ Puppy—a massive Chia Pet seen ’round the world—was loved by the general public and art insiders alike. Its arrival signaled that cute puppies were in and sourpusses could take a hike. And see more pictures at my flickr. Bugging Out“Morgellons” is a beautiful show filled with frustration. Can’t you hear the music on First Friday West

Caitlin the intern took the East side and I took the West side of First Friday–hitting the Fabric Workshop and Museum, Vox Populi, Space 1026 and Black Floor. There was lots to look at, lots to ponder–and lots to love. Paul Chan and the Fabric Workshop Paul Chan’s 1st Light (I don’t know how to make the word Light look crossed out; sorry) silenced the usually chatty gallery goers. The excitement at the Fabric Workshop and Museum is Paul Chan. He’s showing 1st Light, a projected piece he had at the Whitney Biennial. Unlike last time I saw it in ... More » »
