On this snowy day in Philadelphia (picture at the bottom), I hope everyone’s enjoying the view out the window, if not the thought of shoveling snow off the sidewalk. Below is a roundup of some new notable projects and other newsy things from the inbox or from my occasional blog reading. Hope for Hope benefit exhibit and sale, Sunday, Jan. 30, 4-7:30pm, @The Clay Studio
Post by Kip Deeds Bucks County is known for its association with Pennsylvania Impressionism, a movement in which artists like Daniel Garber and Edward Redfield made paintings like the French. It has been difficult to see alternatives to this living tradition in part because history and lore have been intertwined. There are also few institutional venues in Bucks County that look to advance the art of the region in ways that reach beyond a connection to this recent past. The art gallery at Bucks County Community College is one of the few venues where this can happen. Diverse faculty members ... More » »
While we were in Miami we tweeted a half dozen juicy little tidbits. Here they are — illustrated and annotated! — for your delectation. More posts coming today. Art Basel Miami
This week’s Weekly has my review of the show “In Your Dreams” at Art in City Hall. Below’s the copy with some pictures. At a time of great energy and excitement in the city’s art community, “Art in City Hall”—an exhibition program launched in 1984—is stuck doing business the old-fashioned way.
a mixed media collage by Deborah Gross-Zuchman, part of her Windows Into War series A Puffin Foundation award went to Deborah Gross-Zuchman to continue getting into more hands her book of poetry and paintings, “Windows Into War.” The book is a response to the Iraq invasion at a time when her son Alex was an officer in the Marines. (He’s back in Philly, having survived the Marines and gone on to other things). One of the images related to this project–a mixed media collage/painting– is currently up at the Eakins House as part of the Mural Arts Program‘s Creative Capital ... More » »

Click To Play To get rid of the big movie window, just reload the artblog page. In episode 13, we visit Philadelphia Art Alliance to see the works of Kip Deeds, Jessica Doyle and Kiff Slemmons. As usual, our undying love goes to David Kessler, El Magnifico del Video, who performs miracles.
This week’s Weekly has my review of the Philadelphia Art Alliance summer shows. Below is the copy with some pictures. Crafty Bastards After a misstep a few years back when it got rid of a popular curator, Philadelphia Art Alliance rebounds strong with a mix of big and small shows. PAA’s dedication to showing local emerging artists in its smaller spaces is especially welcome. Opportunities for solo exhibits by young Philly artists are few and far between. Most established galleries have full stables and rarely pick up new talent, and museums mostly eschew Philadelphia artists except when they’re a) dead, ... More » »
Kip Deeds and glue, 2006 This semester we taught at Tyler on the third floor, and down below us on two, Kip Deeds was teaching a printmaking class. Because his schedule and ours coincided, we kept saying hi in the hall but never made it to one anothers’ classes. So now that the semester is just about over, we’re back to communing with Kip via email. We just learned from him that the Newark Museum has purchased his drawing “Nat Turner,” one of a large number of his works based on American history. The piece was a purchase prize winner ... This week’s Weekly has my review of Arcadia’s Works on Paper exhibit. Here’s the art page and below is the copy with more pictures. As usual, there’s more pix at flickr and here’s Libby’s post on the show. Arcadia FireThe tiny out-of-the-way gallery hosts the “it” show of the season. Installation shot. As usual the pairings are great, as here, with Judith Schaechter’s print “Child Bride” who is vomiting flowers, echoed with the pile of black bird confetti on the floor by Gabriel Martinez. Nils Orth’s untitled magical alien photo portraits stare like visitors from another dimension. Arcadia University‘s Biennial ... More » »
