Malcolm McLaren, punk impresario and artist, dead at age 64

According to the obituary in the NY Times the artist and provocateur of punk died of mesothelioma in Switzerland where he was being treated for the cancer.  McLaren was in Philadelphia last summer to prepare for his show of videos at PAFA.  I interviewed him in August and found him to be a mesmerizing raconteur of stories about his past as an artist, designer and music maker. He talked like the energizer bunny–unstoppable flow of words in monologues so fun and interesting  I could have listened all day.  It’s sad he’s gone.

Weekly Update – Malcolm McLaren talks about video, art and his past

This week’s Weekly has my interview with Malcolm Mclaren, whose video Shallow 1-21 opens this week at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts’ Morris Gallery.  Below is my copy with some pictures. Before he became the godfather of punk Malcolm Mclaren — founder and manager of the Sex Pistols — was an art student and a mischief-maker.  Mclaren’s new video at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts proves he’s still out to make trouble as well as art.

Whole lotta shaking going on at PAFA

When an institution announces the receipt of a big grant for contemporary art programming we want to know more. Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Curator of Contemporary Arts Julien Robson snagged a whopping $440,000 grant from the William Penn Foundation for contemporary art programing over the next three years, including support for the Philagrafika exhibit opening January 2009, five solo exhibits of young and emerging artists starting in May in the Morris Gallery, and the exhibit We’re All Still Here, scheduled to open October 2011.
