Big bang, small bang at Gallery Joe

The big shock in Gallery Joe‘s current show is what has happened to the space. The usual Joe m.o. is to hang the work in calmest presentation possible, neatly arrayed around the small gallery’s spaces.

Near and far at the art fairs

Hiroto Kitigawa, full-size figure of a woman, at Tokyo Gallery + BTAP at Scope. My best New York moment last weekend didn’t have much to do with the art fairs. A street vendor, a purveyor of hummus, baklava, and more, whipped out his prayer rug, tenderly brushed it off with his hand, and bent toward Mecca to pray. I didn’t take a picture. It seemed rude.

Going, going, gone

Martin Wilner, Journal of Evidence Weekly #127, 2006, ink on paper, diameter 10″; this one is still available; he also has an amazing fold-out journal of fellow subway riders and overheard quotes. Wilner is one of the artists in Ink! I stopped by Gallery Joe Friday afternoon and saw a sea of red dots. Nearly half the show was sold! While I was there, people were perusing the work, looking pretty serious. Weekly Update – Ink! at Gallery Joe

This week’s Weekly has my short editor’s pick review of Ink! at Gallery Joe. Below is the copy with some pictures. More photos at flickr. Ink is a persnickety art material, but one with a cult following. Perfectionist artists often make their own inks (grinding pigments or using alternative liquids like tea), and many are fanatics about brushes and pens. Call them old-fashioned or visionary, but some day soon these artists will be our only link to the ancient material.
