What a relief to do an overnight in New York–it elevates the one-day marathon to a true vacation. This one included Renaissance portraits at the Met, Maurizio Cattelan at the Guggenheim, The Book of Mormon on Broadway and the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side. Scene downtown – Julie Mehretu’s mural and Skin Fruit at the NuMu

Kitty, my Milwaukee buddy, and I spent a misty afternoon with Cate two Sundays ago walking around lower Manhattan and going to the New Museum’s Skin Fruit show.  Part of our downtown walk was inspired by Calvin Thompkins’ New Yorker article about the $5 million mural by Julie Mehretu. $5 million? Kitty, who paints murals in Milwaukee, wanted to see this thing, and so did I.

Simon Says at the ICA

Historian and art historian Simon Schama spoke at ICA last Friday. The house was packed Friday night for Simon Schama‘s talk, The Beast in Art, at ICA. Steve and I sat in the front, eager to hear an author we’ve long admired for books like The Embarrassment of Riches and Citizens, as well as his pieces in the New Yorker. Schama, London-born and Cambridge-educated historian and art historian now teaching at Columbia, is so popular and so busy, that Claudia Gould, introducing him, said “We booked this two years ago and we’re so delighted to have him here.” The talk ...
