New News: Comedy at PhilaMOCA, POST studio tours, Campuzano run-in with a snake

News Comedy Night @ PhilaMOCA This Saturday, October 1, at 7:00 PM, PhilaMOCA will be the site of I LOVE MITCH HEDBERG: Art for the Late Great Comedian. A number of comedy acts (including comedy by Andrew Jeffrey Wright), refreshments, and artwork are on tap. Special guest Lynn Shawcroft will screen a video of unreleased Mitch Hedberg comedy footage.

Kensington ramble to Crane Arts, Little Berlin, Rebekah Templeton

It’s remarkable how much territory you can cover and art you can see in an afternoon, on foot, in Kensington. Here’s a sample of some offerings from my walk last Saturday afternoon.  I started at Little Berlin, where Landscape Techne, the group show curated by LB member Kristen Neville, suggests that no matter how electronically-or technologically-sophisticated we are as a society, artists will always have a need to create landscape imagery of some sort.

Videos shine in Ground Play at Nexus

Video works by two artists stand out at Nexus. The show, Ground Play, includes art by a number of Nexus members, including work from six Nexus artists invited by the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education to visit and respond to the history and topography of its Brolo Hill Farm, SCEE’s second site.

Fired up about clay, the tour — Part 2

This post continues the tale of our NCECA (National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts) shuttle bus tour on Mar. 31 of ceramics exhibits in the Fishtown/Northern Liberties parts of town. Little Berlin “Scene,” an international show organized by Jennifer Woodin at Little Berlin is spare and a little chilly. Supergirl! all-girl videos at Nexus

At this moment when video has become an enormous presence in Philadelphia, one of the smartest and up-to-date video group shows around is at Philadelphia’s vintage collective, Nexus.  Supergirl!, an exhibit of work by nine women, is provocative–both for its post-feminist content and its art historical chops.

At Nexus–my face in your space

A fabulous show of contemporary portraits, my face in your space, at Nexus, is a reminder that 1) no two faces are alike 2) no two eyes are alike 3) no two minds are alike, and 4) we all love to look at faces.

Nexus: Bonnie Scott saves wilderness, hackers save stuff

The Wilderness Society installation by Bonnie Brenda Scott goes from paintball splatters to exuberant printmaking–61 pieces of art in all, but who’s counting? After all, the pieces flow into one another all over Nexus; they climb up the windows, roil across the walls and tumble across the floor.

Never too late

Radio alert

This has been simmering for a while and we’re excited about it: NEXUS/foundation for today’s art will be transforming its gallery space into a low powered radio station (broadcast range – 3.5 mile radius) for two months in December 2008 and January 2009. During gallery hours (Wed – Sun 12 to 6 PM) artists, musicians, performers, djs, activists, poets, scholars, local community groups and other members of the public will be given the opportunity to use the radio broadcast in a manner for which it is intended – public enjoyment and information.
