News – Craft fair on Rittenhouse Square, 3rd Ward seeks restaurant, Leeway awards and more!

News First ever PA Guild of Craftsmen fair at Rittenhouse Rittenhouse Square is the location of a fine arts fair every year but it’s never (to our knowledge) held a fine crafts fair.  This Spring (May 11-13), Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen will host their fine craft fair in the park. More than 140 fine craftsmen and artisans from around the state and nation will show and sell handmade jewelry, furniture, pottery, clothing and other crafted items.

News: Art and airplanes, Printeresting edits, opportunities, and more!

News The art and airplane trend We’ve told you  before about Jordan Griska’s “Grumman Greenhouse“, the repurposed submarine bomber turned sculpture/community greenhouse that was recently installed in Lenfest Plaza. Well artist Matthew Day Jackson also has part of a plane – the cockpit of a B-29 – on display in London as part of his exhibit at Hauser & Wirth. The piece is entitled “Axis Mundi”, and while it is cool, it isn’t a greenhouse, so we think Griska wins this round.

Adrienne Skye Roberts' bogus facsimile of the Daily Worker, with a photo of her grandfather, Joseph Roberts, previously known as Sam Gobeloff.

The red scare and Adrienne Skye Roberts

Adrienne Skye Roberts‘ reading of her family history, with visual aids, is a magical thing, occupying its own unique space between a performance and a talk. I heard her Swimming Lessons and the Red Scare at the Coral Street Arts House, with about 20 other people, a couple of whom figured in her story. You can hear her Friday, Sept. 23 at Vox Populi if you missed her Coral Street talk (details at the end; a talk for tomorrow night has been cancelled).

News and Ops: Norway->NYC, Red Scare lecture, Philly Photo day, and more

News Norway in NYC Following our last news post about Milwaukee in New York, now you can catch a piece of Norway too!  NORWAY NOW in NYC opens at .NO Gallery at 253 E. Houston on Sept. 7.  The multimedia exhibit mirrors Oslo’s annual juried art exhibition Høstutstillingen. The New York show had almost 600 submissions, but the jurors Koan Jeff Baysa and Omar Lopez-Chahoud narrowed it down to six artists. Opening reception is September 7 from 6 – 10 PM and the show runs until October 2.

New — Philadelphia Art Hotel residencies

We were intrigued by the name: Philadelphia Art Hotel. And when they sent us an email about their new residency program we called them up. This seat-of-the-pants artists’ residency in West Philadelphia is the third we know of in town. There are also Pifas’ and James Dupree’s programs.
