Philly invades New York this weekend – Mayor Michael Nutter at the New Museum and ICA’s Claudia Gould at a NY Gallery Week panel Mayor Nutter participates in the Sustainable City Mayoral Panel, Friday, May 6, 7-8:30pm ($10), part of the Festival of Ideas for the New City, a symposium May 4-8 at the New Museum, sponsored by the NuMu, NYU, Columbia and other New York organizations.  Follow their blog.

Weekly Update – Deconstructing image, Wall Space at PPAC

Virgil Marti’s sculptures “Night Watch” and “Vesper” stand like sentinels at the entrance to the Philadelphia Photo Art Center with a kind of haunted-castle grandeur. The 6-foot, 80-pound slabs are shaped like ornate mirrors one might find in Snow White’s stepmom’s bedroom; instead of glass and foil, though, they’re made of rough plywood plated in chrome. They reflect a dull sheen from a nearby window, but no clear images—it’s a standoff between viewer and mirror in which Narcissus loses, and a perfect greeting to Wall Space, a great little show about image.

True Fiction–Photos always lie at PPAC

Even the documentary photos included in Philadelphia Photo Arts Center‘s show True Fiction tell lies of a sort.

Subtle and mysterious photos of Daydream Nation

Post by Emily Friedman Daydream Nation, PPAC’s 1st Annual Contemporary Photography Exhibition, opened several weeks ago in the Crane Arts Building.  Philadelphia Photo Art Center received 170 entries for the juried show, from which they chose 34 photographs by 34 different artists and awarded three prizes. Jock Reynolds and Joshua Chuang, respectively Yale University Art Gallery’s Director and Assistant Curator of Photographs, judged the entries.

Weekly Update — Two photo shows and many more to see

This week’s Weekly has my review of photography shows at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Philadelphia Photo Art Center. From Woodmere Art Museum to the Print Center and places in between, Philadelphia celebrates the 170th year of photography this fall with exhibits that showcase the medium’s origins and point to the region’s strength in producing leaders in the field. Here’s a peek at two of the shows.
