U.S. debut–Bill Viola comes to Pafa and leaves behind a gem
Bill Viola came to Pennsylvania Academy last month for the opening of “Ocean without a Shore,” his three-channel video installation in its American debut! The installation –a new purchase by the museum to be permanently on display in the Morris Gallery — is installed as a triptych in what’s now a dark, chapel-like space, where the piece casts a moody, elegiac spell. The work seems to conjure up the spirits of the dead with cinematic special effects and sound right out of the Matrix.
George Tooker–a local amazing story from PAFA
Read it first here on artblog–a scoop about the George Tooker show from Robert Cozzolino, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts curator of modern art–and curator of this show. He wrote: Here’s the scoop in a nutshell… A few weeks back, a man e-mailed me at PAFA to say he visited the Tooker show and loved it. “I noticed you had the study for ‘Laundress’ on view. If it is of interest, I have the painting in Philadelphia.” Well, I nearly fell out of my chair.
Peter Saul skirts the truth but so does everyone really, and we all have a great time at PAFA panel
Patricia Hills, David Curtis, Daniel Heyman, Peter Saul, Jane Irish at the Symposium at PAFA, Nov. 1. Peter Saul‘s exhibit at PAFA was the excuse for an all-day symnposium there on political art earlier this month. But Saul wasn’t the only headliner participating. We also fell for Art Spiegelman‘s bon mots, Laylah Ali’s sometimes veiled wait-wait-don’t-tell commentary about her own work, and Enrique Chagoya’s conflation of art and cartooning. The day also included insights from Philadelphia artists Daniel Heyman and Jane Irish, scholar David Carrier, New York artist/activist Sue Coe and moderator Patricia Hills. So I pulled out a pad and started taking notes. Matt was speaking at Untitled, Jenny Jaskey Gallery‘s brand new forum on contemporary art that she hopes will help “people to appreciate (and buy!) contemporary art (and works made locally!),” Jaskey wrote us in an email. The week that was
A lot of openings in the last two weekends. I didn’t make them all but I’m going to run some pictures here with some links and say get out there and look around. So much to see so little time. PAFA, Oct. 19, 2006 Libby and I made it to the opening of Steven Power‘s show in PAFA‘s Morris Gallery but didn’t make Space is the Place (Outgoing PAFA Contemporary Art Curator Alex Baker‘s co-curated show also at PAFA). Anthony Campuzano, “The Fall Back and Forth,” 2004, Colored pencil and graphite on panel, 22″ x 28″ First I got an email from Anthony Campuzano saying he was going to be in an exhibit at Adam Baumgold Gallery in New York this summer, an exhibit called Text Messages. I checked it out and it’s a star-studded summer confection, including the likes of Ed Ruscha, Jennie Holzer and Aline Kominsky Crumb. That one opens June 14.
