Weekly Update – Inscrutable, a show about differences

“To make honey, young bee need young flower, not old prune,” says Mr. Miyagi, the Yoda-like master in the 1984 movie “The Karate Kid.”   More than 25 years on, the idea of the “inscrutable Asian” is mostly swept aside by a sushi-loving West.  And now, a local art exhibit uses the one-time insult to mock it. “Inscrutable,” at University of Delaware at Crane Arts (UD Crane), a two-venue show of ethnic artists’ works at UD Crane and Asian Arts Initiative, proves that differences still exist yet nothing is inscrutable. Relationships R Us in the Fleisher Challenge 3

Fleisher Art Memorial ends its season of Challenge exhibits with works that range from whimsical to nostalgic to earnestly activist.   The Challenge shows have always been three emerging artist solo shows in one but if you work at it you can see a common thread running through the works.  In this show, it’s all about relationships.

Jennifer Levonian, Smells Like English Boxwood, 2006-8stop motion animation using watercolor and collage Post Christmas is a slow time for gallery sales–which explains why some galleries go to emerging artists shows at this time of year, testing the waters to see who’s got the right stuff. Since the New Acropolis show in Jan. 2004, we have been looking forward to the annual melange of new and surprising art at Fleisher-Ollman to brighten up our post-holiday-season blues.
