The Weekly has my Editor’s Choice quick hit of Temple Gallery’s Manybody, curated by Jesse Goldstein of Space 1026.
“Manybody”
Through July 21. Free. Temple Gallery, 259 N. Third St. 215.925.7379.
“YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL,” reads the huge sign at Second and Spring Garden. Ever wondered what that’s about? Find out at “Manybody,” Temple Gallery’s paean to art activism. It’s a big documentary show that chronicles a number of socially/politically activist projects by the groups (deep breath) A/WAY, Celebrate People’s History: Poster Project, Project Hello, Tit Pin, the West Philadelphia Re-Signage Committee and You Are Beautiful. “Manybody” is long on words and visually spare—it’s a show you read more than view—and several of the projects are poignant, evocative and aesthetically interesting as well as activist and interventionist. You Are Beautiful’s monumental block lettering sign—put up for the show—is as bold as the famous Hollywood sign, but a million times more empowering.
