From the vault — Meet Artblog comics artist Beth Heinly

[If you’ve seen yourself in Beth Heinly’s sometimes-morbid, always-honest the 3:00 book comic strip, you’re not alone. Beth, who’s worked with artblog for years, sat down with us last March to talk about a show she curated at Vox Populi; her art-making philosophy; and her childhood, which she describes as a “battle between good and evil”.

Beth’s work is currently showing at Vox Populi in a group exhibition called Supernatural. Listen to the podcast, and then check out the show! — the Artblog editors]

Beth Heinly grew up in the Philadelphia area.  She draws comic strips (under the title the 3:00 o’clock book) that tell humorous and dark stories from her life and she sometimes creates graphic novels, like a new one “Server Serial Killer” she is working on.  (Beth’s day job is being a server at the Irish pub, Fado, so we are guessing she’s got lots of material to work with for her new book.)  But Beth’s also a performance artist and a self-taught curator responsible for some great programming at Little Berlin, where she was a member, and now, at Vox Populi, where she currently is a member.

Heinly joined Vox Populi in October, 2012, after being a Little Berlin member for three years.  She talks about the burnout but also the excitement and fulfillment of being part of a collective gallery.  Beth organized the current Vox Populi exhibit, “Collection.”  Among the ancillary programming for the show is a cellphone tour in which the collectors who lent work for the exhibit talk about their collections.  This Sunday, Mar. 31, at 1pm, at Vox Populi, there’s a panel discussion about collecting.  artblog‘s own Libby Rosof and others (Jacque Liu, Anne Schaefer, John Ollman, Debra Ward) will talk about why they collect what they collect.  Don’t miss it!
