IN WHICH THE INTERVIEWER GETS BENT OUT OF SHAPE OVER THE WHY OF A PRETTY PICTURE Annette: All your stuff is hand-made by yourself? Alex: Yeah. Annette: Would you ever change that? Alex: No. I think, well, some people say that someday I’ll get an assistant to make the work for me. . . but the time spent with the work is important to me. Annette: Today it could go beyond that, you could get the work made in another country. Artists ... More » »

Weekly Update 2 – Spring arts roundup

This week’s Weekly has my Spring art roundup. Below’s the copy. More photos at flickr. Young artists are ready for action. Mike Stifel’s Strange Attractors, detail, at FLUXSpace. Soap bubbles infused with air create sculptures that look like pet soaps (ala pet rocks). Philly’s art world is buzzing as young artists and curators take things into their own hands, creating shows at FLUXSpace, Little Berlin, My House and elsewhere. The shows may be a little jagged and experimental, but that’s partly the point. There’s great promise in the youthful explorations and enthusiasm. And because the art world loves to party ... To my mind I Attach Myself to You is a rather dark exploration of ... More » »

Weekly Update – East Coast/West Coast at Pageant

This week’s Weekly has my review of East Coast/West Coast at Pageant Gallery. Below is the copy with some pictures. More photos at flickr.Polar ExplorersAn exhibition at Pageant Gallery examines opposites and innuendos. “East Coast/West Coast” at Pageant: Soloveev Gallery has little to do with geography. What the group show seems to have on its mind is polarity and supposed opposites. The ideas are subtly handled, with art full of double meanings, innuendos and punch lines. Like The Sarah Silverman Program, the subtext is mightier than the surface. Mikey Wild, detail, Demons and Angels, 30 acrylic paintings, at Pageant. Mikey ... More » »

Stand By-Tech Difficulties at Blip TV

I posted Episode 3 of Look! It’s Libby and Roberta last night and all seemed to be working fine. This morning I can’t locate blip tv (the host) and Episode 3 appears to be lost in cyber space. Meanwhile, here’s a couple shots of bubbles for your Sunday morning. Alex Da Corte‘s birthday pinata party at ICA‘s Locally Localized Gravity took place last Wednesday on the Black Floor stage. (Happy 26th birthday, Alex!). I stopped by before the pinata whacking to check it out. The pinata (a jewel- and sequins-encrusted dead deer–quite stunning and death-like in its pose) seemed too ...
